oranges as candles

  • Hey Guest, Early bird pricing on the Summer Moot (29th July - 10th August) available until April 6th, we'd love you to come. PLEASE CLICK HERE to early bird price and get more information.
Anyonelse tried this out?
Not much success personally, getting it to light using the recommended olive oil.
A nice alternative to normal tea light candles but only if it works.
So if anyone can shed some light on this ( pun intended ;-) ) id be interested to know,
Thanks... Ice lady.

Presumably you are referring to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YJgdOFYtj8
It would probably be more successful with Meths but stand back!
Personally I would rather use a torch as I was always taught not to play with my food. ;) Actually I want to have a go now I have seen this, I'll report back with my findings. Another natural wick in the orange skin may work better. These could be passed off as quite Halloweeny.

If you are interested in food oil based lights then here is what I posted on another thread a few days ago:

If you wish to make a simple and windproof olive oil lamp (should work with cheaper vegetable oil as well) then here is a link to a commercial version and then a youtube link to someone reproducing it cheaply and easily with 12 gauge wire and a glass jar (OR YOU COULD USE AN ORANGE!!!!) .https://www.lehmans.com/p-4708-merry...-oil-lamp.aspx
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHnarA9ks7U

I also have these for the Naughty Corner at the Moot next year:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BEST-MOST-...item484a6c5799 Check out the second video.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/52-OIL-CAN...item1c37c92508 A Jewish version

They are cheap, use vegetable oil, work well and can be used in any jar or bowl, probably even plastic when outside. You can clean the plastic version but they get messy with the oil. Replacement wicks are cheap but ordinary string works for wicks as well:

Well there goes another hour of my life to Youtube after reading this thread!!

Had a look for the floaters idea and seems you can make them with drinks/water bottle bottoms. Hole in centre and wick.

Another project.....

You can make floaters out of drinks/water bottle bottoms? That sounds interesting. Have you got a link?

Update:

Ok, found it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHoj0Oe6O_g

I thought this was rather nifty too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_S7VudNwgU Veg. oil candle using sand, a stick and some cotton.

If you can get it to work with the olive oil it would be a nice cheap alernative for lighting...
Monikieman...As for wasting an hour of your life...this site is all about sharing ideas and not moaning publicly if you don't like the ideas passed on by other members...its simple if your not interested in the idea move on to another thread and don't leave sarky comments...!

Maybe read it differently but I thought he was being jovial saying that there was more time getting sucked into Youtube. Which it does in a sometimes good sometimes bad way.

Maybe a smiley on the end changes it -

That was how I read it; nothing sarky about it.

Sorry if I offended. I know I'm slow on the PC but I didn't voluntarily spend a hour on Youtube on something I'm not interested in!

I thought the humour would carry itself but obviously not. I will try to post more accurately and seriously in the future
(and I've learned where the smiley faces are. Thanks chaps)

LOL, are you not a morning humour person there Greg, had a bad night? ;) Sincerely thanks for defending the site and members but, erm, target selection needs a little work. :p

Olive oil works well with all these techniques and produces the least smell even when rancid. Obviously standard used or fresh vegetable oil (Rape Seed) would be even cheaper and also works great from my experience. Tweaking is needed to cut down on smoke otherwise you end up with sooting of anything above, not a great deal if that is a tree of course.

I'm going to work on making a selection for the NC at the Moot, perhaps even add it to a class on improvised camping gadgets. That will be another hour of my life. Something to do between sleeping and cooking until 5am I suppose!

Trying the bottle bottom just now and it works fine.

Only problem is getting it to float evenly. Just a bit jute twine for a wick. it's still lit and hasn't set fire to the table yet!

Orange will be next try with some wire for a wick holder. Still thinking a bit wine bottle cork glued to a bit alu can and a hole drilled in the middle for the wick.

You could try sawing bits off fork andles! ;)

Tin foil seems easier than Al. cans and glue but sounds interesting.

Did you shield the plastic bottle bottom with a piece of tin foil?

The Youtube recipe I watched didn't use foil. I tried to copy the eBay ones but you don't get good look at them.

Will update with aluminium and cork and will have a look for suitable wire tomorrow.
