Anyone else seen the new Robin Hood-ie film? What are your thoughts on it ? A good tale originally told or something else?

As I read somewhere else it is like a two hour film about Peter Parker just for the last 15 mins of the film for him to turn into Spider-Man. I guess they are hoping to make part two......

Yes that does sum up the film. Entertaining though but nothing realy to do with Robin hood

Apparently the point was to introduce the history of Robin of Sherwood and his time in the crusades to expand the often told rambling in the woods malarky. A nobel idea I'm sure. But where's all the green tights???

The beginning (the battle scene) I think was trying to be like the beginning of gladiator, but it didn't seem to have quite the same grittiness that Ridley Scott managed to encapsulate in that.

Although the middle had a fair amount of things going on once again it seemed to lack that little extra to grip your attention.

The end was okay, but no more than that.

The film had been hyped up, people expected a lot as it was the reunion of Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe and it had been compared to Gladiator. In the end the film just wasn't gritty enough to grip you, it didn't deliver on peoples expectations, but in the end not many things do.

I havent stopped laughing about the landing craft yet....

Yes, the whole landing craft thing at the end was a bit of a wincer. As was the whole Normandy-landings set up of the final battle (English archers/German MGs on the cliffs, arrows/bullets slicing through water and bodies etc).
A friend described the film as Gladiator in 12th Century England. Which it was. Russell Crowe was playing essentiallythe same character. And Russelll Crowe's accent was a bit of a wobbly linguistic spruce goose.
But I still bloody loved it.

Agree, Obviously 'Saving Private Ryan' had a strong impact on someone.

It struck me as another 'Gladiator'

Film Checklist;-

Reluctant Hero From War crusade wishes to return home.
Rises quickly throught the Ranks winning Mens respect.
Encounters older powerful 'father' figure who also respects Hero.
Due to his popularity Hero creates arch enemy from New King/Caesar.
Hero although coming from unskilled , uncultured background ( nothing wrong with that ) blends in and rises through social ranks.
Big Battle scene where Hero ( relucantly ) shows just how bloody good he is with a Sword/Bow.

< Cough-Cough.... Braveheart...Cough>

Bring back Errol flynn.

Don't want to sound negative but although a massive budget and great Directorand Actor i thought the Script was way off mark , Robin Hood is great enough as a Outlaw Legend , no need to make him open a can of 'Whup-a-s-s' on the Frenchy King.

Heyho ,
I ain't seen the film , but I watched some trailers and thought No I don't want to watch that . I'm going to have to see it though . Swords and armour etc , I just wish that people would make films like this without the need for a historical tag , you know just make up a name for it like they used to in the 50's 60's etc . If it's not about Robin Hood why call it Robin Hood .
Cheers , Trev .

Don't even get started on the historical accuracy thing. Although I loved that the warhammer got used so much.

I'd like to see a second film with RH in the greenwood etc. I did enjoy this film, but was disapointed with the title. I'm a huge Robin Hood fan, and this was as far from that as we could get. Well, apart from the BBC series of course.

That was just so very bizarre. I so wanted it to be good, the sets looked fantastic but I agree it just didn't have that special thing that makes some films gripping. Lady Marion did wash her feet in one of my wooden bowls though so can't be all bad.

When I heard that they were getting craftsmen like you working on it, I had really high hopes that it would be accurate. RS seems to draw upon many eras and copy and paste what he feels would look good on screen. Shame. At least your bowls got some quality screen time though.

I haven't seen it yet.

Is the theme tune;

Lobin Hood, Lobin Hood,
Liding thloo la Glen,
Lobin Hood, Lobin Hood etc etc...

If not, then 80's duo Shonen Knife have been over looked...

I have TBH Russel Crowe is good in Glad He Ate Her, and Master and Commander and "modern" epics of that ilk.

In this fillum, does he say "Unleash the tights of hell!!!" or something like that, so I can misquote it?

Yours,

Bad (You know I'm bad - so beat it!) King John.

I'm sure that one Scottish weasel could get sucked into a jet engine, if I could get one up there :swordfigh
