'Homestead' Film

I saw a trailer for this film and thought it might be apt for us.

The blurb says 'During a rapid collapse of society, a rich man's mountain compound struggles between the military compulsions of its veteran operators and the rural values of its member families.'

Link here https://www.imdb.com/title/tt29137778/

The trailers are what my perception is of a 'collapse' might be but I think that has been influenced by books I have read.

So in effort to get some 'chatter' on this site. Do people think this film portrays what would happen in the USA?

I thought I would say USA as we do not have the guns or land etc they do. But thoughts on the UK equally welcome.

Looks more like complete fantasy rather than something based on real life.

I would be mildly interested to see inside some of the less extreme bunkers over there.

I read an interesting non-fiction book about the "rich person" end of the prepping scene a while back, written by a respected sociologist/anthropologist.

The problem all these rich people have is how to stop their "protection" staff turning their guns on their rich patron when they realise that money is worthless and if they bump off the rich person they can take the resources themselves......

This chap would explain to them that they needed to start now- by using their wealth to help build cooperative local based resilient communities and being part of those communities- rather than building personal luxury bunkers.

I don't think he had much success in getting the message across, but at least he tried.

GC

Am I rich? No.

Will I be one of the others if something serious happened - Yes.

Can I relate to Bill Gates /Elon Musk/Mark Zuckerbergs concerns over how to best protect their bunker compounds???

Struggling if I'm honest.. , but thats my failing. I shall try harder. :)

It looks like a good watch. Definitely something i'd be interested in.

If something like that happened over here, i expect things would get very messy, very quickly. Too many different racial groups and nationalities represented here, and i feel the population would splinter into like for like groups, in full competition with each other.

I think the huge amount of space in the USA affects what they can do. You do read about compounds there which we struggle with in the UK.
Do you think its just that? I have a feeling prepping is far more , I want to say , Mainstream in the states - its almost like a sort of recognised hobby?

Probably ties in well with the pioneer spirit and appeals to some inner call of self reliance.
Not sure if its seen differently now post covid

I think American individualism and their attitudes to property, protecting themselves and all that comes into it.

I respect some of it to be honest. I can’t imagine not being willing to protect what is mine and those that I love, but that idea seems to be looked on as thuggish or silly here.

I am sure available space has a factor though, as outside of cities it’s much easier to get a reasonable sized chunk of land to call your own.

Agree to that. I feel we have been conditioned down to a subservient state of ingrained acceptance to being powerless.

I did see this today and me chuckle. I guess its in the nature

From that paragraph I'm guessing that one side of the community is going to be portrayed as more hard nosed , emotionally detached ( or disciplined ) vs the community based rural folks. I'm hoping its not as cliche as that and is somewhat more varied and nuanced as nothing destroys a good film more than lazy writing.

I'd be very reluctant to trust anyone who views protecting your own and what's yours as a negative thing. How would you incorporate that mentality into a group who need to work together and protect each other?

Doesn't that often happen in times of social unrest however?

Bit of personally justified redistribution.?

Any modern city riot instigated by some potential perceived ( maybe rightly) injustice turns the local TV store into an all you can carry Plasma TV black friday special.

It's not something i've personally experienced mate. I was on the other side (peace keeping) in the Ivory coast back in late 2002/early 2003 (operation Licorne), but they didnt have tv stores to loot, just he other side to attack.

Cant say ive seen much of that in the UK either. The US sure, but not here.

HillBill though in no way as bad as you saw in the Ivory Coast we did have the riots in 2011. If that was widespread where could we go??

The UK is too small to 'hide' and very few places have the scope to be turned into a secure compound as seen in the film.
