We call them shinies, and usually they get cleaned up to show and tell, but like most folks every one of mine gets used.

To upload photos you have to have them on a server site and then add the link into your post.

cheers,
Toddy

Madrat - you'll need somewhere to upload the photos online...
www.photobucket.com is a common one.

Once you've uploaded the image to your photobucket account, hover your mouse over the image, click the box next to where it says "

Also agree... However if it breakes after being hit whilst battening then?
So a thick knife comes in handy every so often.

I have been using an Armageddon for some three years or so for a majority of tasks. and it is good for clearing trails as well as intricate stuff ..... Tho not as managable as a Mora or Pukko type. At least they can be used without breaking.....
You say that like Moras are breaking left and right while batoning? I've never had problems giving moras a beating, and I recall seeing a picture of one hammered into a tree and stood on - a little bent but otherwise fine. Real proof that good steel and good HT are what's necessary for a strong knife, not just adding more material. I don't quite get why so many people feel the need to use one knife for everything though.

I'm with Bigshot - axes are for chopping and splitting, knives are for cutting! With very few exceptions, which would include Kukris, Machetes and Leukus, as well as some of the finer axes, all of which can do both. Just my opinion of course!

I've been thinking about this multiple tools option.......mine are usually a knife, just now it's my WM1 that's getting most use  , a bahco saw and a set of pruners.

Traditionally of course it'd be a sgian dubh, a dirk, a sgian ochlas and a claymore, but that's a touch dated now...........beats the hell out of a Taliban special though :lmao:

Yknow, I can't quite explain why, but I've wondered for quite a while what knife you use :p

What's a sgian ochlas out of curiosity? I've not heard that one.... I'm still trying to get around to making a bushsgian!

Draven - think sgian dubh but under the armpit instead of in the sock and you'll be close.

Toddy - I'd definitely take something more like that if I was going to single-handedly take down the taliban in hand to hand combat (haha - can't see that happening myself)

My ideal is about 3 or 4 knives and an axe.
1 Bushcrafter type knife.
1 Smaller Scandi (Mora 120)
1 Filleting knife.
1 General knife for food prep.

If I was going to a real wilderness area, say a canadian or swedish canoe trip or something, that'd change a bit, I'd have a few spares and a proper axe in case I needed to do some felling rather than just using a small hatchet to split deadwood.
I'd probably chuck a bow saw in too.

Generally I've got 2 knives and an axe though.

I'm spoiled.............Leon-1 custom made my WM1 and sheath  :D

I think the thunk as the parang dropping through the letterbox was the wake up call for HWMBLT.........his comment went, "D'you not think the knifeage is getting a wee touch excessive ?? "
Son1 to Son2 discussing what to do with my kit when I croak it said, " ....... we contact the polis and ask for an amnesty! "

The sgian ochlas is the underarm dagger.

Russ has a beautiful set by Stuart Mitchell, and GrahamS has some lovely toys too :D
Hoodoo has a collection of sgian dubhs iirc.

cheers,

I was under the impression that the sgian dubh was traditionally worn under the arm as well to be honest :p Very nice knife Toddy :D

I'm with you on the knives and axe - the heaviest knife I have is my leuku and I still don't notice it on my belt. The axe is somewhat heavier of course but still not a problem for me and well worth it IMO! I just don't get any buzz from struggling to do reasonably well with a single knife for all tasks (not implying others would struggle, but I would - it just doesn't make sense to me) when I can carry several tools and make everything a whole lot easier and more enjoyable :) Again, just my opinion!

Toddy...
...thanks for the link. I enjoyed reading that. The knife I got from Davy Moore (Ireland) came in a similarly unexpected way...
Mine didn't come by post, it was handed over after sinking a few pints of Guinness and a short while looking it over after he showed it to me - even then I didn't know it was for me.
It's a really amazing feeling when someone gives you a blade. I dunno if it gets less dumbfounding when you've got an armoury, but I was speechless when he said "...and this one's yours" and it wasn't just the drink not talking I'll tell ya!

That's my main user too.

Draven...
...I believe the Sgian Dubh evolved from the Sgian Achlais.
Apparently the achlais was a concealed knife, when going into someone's house it'd be good form to reveal any weapons you had so the achlais came out of your armpit and tucked into your sock so it could be seen... so bringing about the Sgian Dubh.

I think it's worth learning to do all your work with just one knife - the knife you'll always have on your person "just in case" you get separated from the rest of your kit (canoe capsize in Canada or Sweden or parts of Scotland for example) - that way you won't be stuck without an axe or whatever if that kind of thing happens. Otherwise I'd sooner have a few suitable tools to hand - weight permitting.

Sorry Hoodoo  so who was the American in the kilt who did have a collection of Maker's sgian dubh's ??

atb ,
M

p.s. the only 'skelton' knife I have is the little Aitor skinner.........and it's awfully good :) I don't think the skelton is under any stress for this type of use.

the link is just for the photo

I know Schwert wears a kilt sometimes but I don't know about the sgian dubh's. I don't recall him having any. But he might. Ya never know what Schwert will have. :lmao:

After reading again I think I misunderstood you, when you said "At least they can be used without breaking" did you mean the Moras and Puukkos? I thought you meant thicker knives, in contrast to Moras and Puukkos - my apologies

Hey Draven Man.... No problem....

What I was saying.....

1. Daves knife broke when he was chopping at some vines in his back yard...

So I suggested some that would be more suited to that job.....

2. No I dont mean Moras etc don't or do break when being wacked as most are generally fairly tough.... However I would sooner baton a thicker knife when splitting wood (Same as using a log splitter and hammer rather than an axe). Or a saw rather than an axe on thin greenwood. Then keep the smaller knives edge for the intricate stuff...

It would (Stand by for flack)... seem that a lot of folk post here pictures of stuff that are very pretty, but I would bet are hardly (if at all) used.

And lets be honest here.... I rarely make stuff (Tho I have done). A majority of knife work is the sort of thing what Dave was doing........ And that means having a generally thicker longer and therefore more usefull blade for the task....

Let's be honest. You haven't posted any photos yourself so you have no room to whine. And since you are demanding it from others, how about some from you? Something besides whacking a green sapling eh? Something that shows some skill with a knife. Also, I might add, you haven't looked this site over very closely have you? If you did, you'd see lots of pics of knives being used.
