Lost in the woods
A new program on old crafts introduced by Monty Don on BBC 2, 12th Feb.
Looks like an interesting program with things like working a pole lath and chair making, thatching.
Better than watching the SAS man doing dangerous things.

Don told the Daily Telegraph: "The recent financial crash and our disillusionment with politicians and our general feeling of mistrust and lack of control means that people are hungry for skills, crafts and things that take time, things that are difficult and knowledge that can't be learnt in a few weeks but needs dedication.

"The truth is that people are now thinking ‘maybe it will take me a year to learn something and that's all right, that's possible because the rewards will come'," he said.

"We have become a society that wants instant gratification, instant consumption and I think people are increasingly feeling that is not the way to go. There are other kinds of gratification for the slower, and the more you put in the more you get out.

"If people can make a living from it, that is a kind of wealth that modern life hasn't been very good at supplying," he said.

The new BBC2 series of six-hour-long programmes, scheduled for February, will see three contestants studying with master craftsmen and women in metalwork, woodcraft, stone masonry, glassmaking, thatching and weaving.

BBC2 controller Janice Hadlow said: "I'm delighted to welcome Monty back to BBC2 in an innovative format that goes back to basics. There is no doubt in these credit crunch times there has been resurgence in our interest in traditional crafts and BBC2 is always keen to explore new areas and reflect the interests of the nation."

Thanks for the heads-up!

A very enjoyable hour! - makes a change to have a traditional crafts programme that is not all hype and sensationalism

I have to agree re the 'workshop' - love the double chute and the soves :You_Rock_

I swear to god I posted an ad I found in the metro onto this forum , it was asking for people to train to learn traditional crafts for a documentary. It was probably this.
Nobody replied if i remember (including me hehe!)

Thats the best bit of tellie ive watched this year. Really enjoyed that, kind of suspense to see if the lass could pull it back and lo and hold she did it, and surprised the other guy never finished his chair. well put together hope the other episodes are as enthralling :)

I soooo wish I had known about this! I'd have been all over it like a tramp on spilt chips, I was slightly peeved at the cop outs by the two trainees but the final effort that won seemed like a very well made piece of woodwork. Why do people, who are given a golden opportunity, whine about it?

I was well pleased with this program a great treat to watch.
Looked a good place to put up a basher, not a Hobo stove to be seen mind you. :lmao:

My wife phoned a friend of ours to remind him it had started and he answered his mobile out in the field, he was Lamping for rabbits.
And yes he did forget.
I reminded him about BBC I player and put the phone down on him (bless his little heart). Well I did not want to have my evening viewing ruined. :lmao:

Missed the start - on the iplayer already though - got to love technology :D

[oh wait, that's surely not something to utter ona bushcraft board...]
