Made my very first knife

Hi Guys

I have had a yearning for sometime now to have a go at making a knife. I have read BB and admired some of the works of art and thought I’m going to have a go at that one day. Well guess what? I finally did it! Last week I booked on a 2 day course with Dave Budd at his workshop in Dartmoor.

I booked 2 days because I thought if I am going to do this, I want to do the whole thing. I wanted to make the knife from scratch, right up to sewing up my own sheath.

On my arrival I explained to Dave that I wanted a lightweight neck knife for general bushcraft duties. I showed my design to Dave and we then set to work.

Dave made a knife the same as my design so he could show me each step of the way. He forged the tip, I forged the tip. He forged the blade, I forged the blade and so it went onto the bevels, tang, normalizing, heat treat and tempering. Dave then took me to choose some handle material. I decided to go for something a little unusual and opted for yew. Once again I followed Dave each step of the way. That took care of day 1

On day 2 we put the finishing touches to the handle then made a start on the sheaths. Once again I copied Dave parrot fashion, from cutting the template to the forming of the leather, the dying process and stitching the sheath. Finally we got busy with the waterstones and put a hair popping edge on the knife.

I do like Dave’s style. At no time did he take the knife from me, he wanted it to be my knife and that way I have the pleasure of knowing that I made the complete article myself.

If there are any lurkers out there who have been pondering on making a knife and have been wondering how to get started I can certainly recommend a couple of days in the company of Dave Budd.

The down side is that now I have got the bug I can see myself hassling you guys for more information when I embark on my next project.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so go easy on me guys. Here is the finished article. Many thanks again Dave.

Here goes for the difficult part, trying to post the pictures!

Nick

Top work and love the yew.

I always think it best when you've done something yourself - so much more satisfying to own and use.

Thanks for putting this up Nick, I'm glad that you had a good time!

I'll try and get a pic of the knife that I made alongside so that folk can see my interpretation of your design. i agree that yew is abeautiful wood, I find myself using it more and more. :)

I'll just mention that Nipper was able to make the complete knife and sheath over two days because he shaped the handle himself at home. Partly due to time constraints but mostly because it allowed us to use 24hr setting epoxy, which is the strongest stuff I have!

I said it before, but you did a good job on that knife. :beerchug:

Yea I think I have got the bug! What I don't have is the equipment!

I am looking into making up one of these one brick forges. I wonder if any members have had much luck with using them? If so what heat source did you use. Maybe a Benzmatic torch from B & Q may work but I didn't want to buy one if it wasn't powerful enough  .

Any advice would be gratefully received ;) .

oh and a closer view of mine ;)

Mine is 185mm overall with an 83mm blade made of W2 (edge quenched) with a ground spine for fire lighting. The handle is of English cherry.

Sadly the photos weren't taken in the best light to show of the beautiful woods :( but you get the idea

Hello nipper,
I made my own forge, its not that difficult.
I use a cut down gas bottle and a cheep hot air gun from the locale market. I run this thru a dimmer switch to very the air flow. And use ordinary BBQ charcoal. You could use just a BBQ and some pipe to plumb in the air to the centre of the fire. Try using some old lawn mower blade at first and use a sledge hammer as an anvil( I some times use a 28Lb one as an anvil)
Hope this helps

Hi Chris

I like the idea of the hot air gun!

Is the dimmer something that you can buy, plug in the blow gun and use straight away or did you have to modify the dimmer in some way?

Have you ever experimented with a home made gas forge?
