I was making some stock the other day when I started to drift off a little in my attention . My good lady has pinched my last puukko I made so at least she is happy, but now im back to the basic ones again. So Im working on another knife now involving curved curved sections in the handle which ive wanted to do for a while.

Heres the design and the cut out pieces arranged, just got to forge the old "G. Barnsley of Sheffield" Rasp into a blade next week as I want to thin the whole length down to around 3-3.5 mm shape the tip and draw out the tang. Then finish the drilling of all 25 handle peices. I reckon I'll be sick of posh ones for a bit and then crack on with normal knives. Well we'll see :)

Its Buffalo horn, Birch Burl, Oak cross section, aluminium beer can, leather scraps, and Birch bark. So apart from the horn its all locally gathered and free. The rasp was found in an old disused workshop, and the last one I used was really nice steel.

Should have it done back end of next week, so i'll post up some finished pictures then.

Cheers, Addo.

Gathering the right can and preparing it properly by emptying the contents is jolly hard work. :)

Cheers fellas.

Been a busy boy today, and cracked on with this fella some more.

Forged out the blade today and finished the bolster and pommel sections, and cut/drilled all the holes.

Thinning the flat rasp end, from 6mm to 4mm for the blade.

Shaping the tip

Tidying the drawn out tang for fitting the bolster.

Checking straightness. Not far off.

All 27 bits ready, Just the Grinds, Heat treat and clean up to finish before assembling tomorrow.

Cheers, Addo :)

Indeedy....really nice Ihave not seen a cross section used in a handle, it looks sweetreally like the way all your sections follow the curve of the cross section....Get it finished...we ALL want to see ;)

Cheers for the comments.
Yeah the anvil is sweet. Its designed to fit in a larger one, but my mate welded on the steel plate on top to make it more usable. I love it.
Hopefully getting a larger normal anvil in a week or two that was sat in a ladys garden in the village for years ! When she heard that it was going to be put to use she was pleased and offered it for a small fee :)

wow addo,
Looks great... can i ask why you satrted with the rasp? what was your reasoning in choosing the source material?

Good quality tool steel, and free were the main reasons. Plus Im a bit limited with my forge and straightening/flattening out car springs is bit more work, so with the rasp I only have to uniformly thin the piece and some basic shaping. I also use rasps to shape the handles so there's a nice connection there. Theres a little surprise with the appearance of the blade too :)

Almost there, last bit to clamp up leaving the tang to peen over the final section.

All done, just a couple of hrs shaping tomorrow, then I'll pop it in the oil or a good soaking.

really loving the thread Addo - I'm making a very similar blade for myself just now. though it is taking a back seat as I'm making stuff for customers too. lol.

mine is from an old ball bearing casing. I usually use old files as they are a good steel as you say.

looking forward to pictures of the finished knife!

ps - what an odd little anvil you have. - what is it?
- just saw the more detailed pics of it over on BB. - looks like a nice little work horse.
All the best

Andy

Cheers Andy, yours sounds interesting, get some pics up when your ready.

Not sure on the proper term for the anvill, but its tapered leg is designed to fit into the square hole of a much larger anvill as an additional tool. It was lying around in my mates shed, so he welded on the plate to extend the flat working space. Square hole into a big log with the bit and brace and jobs a good un :)
I tend not to hit the overhang too much but its handy for moving the worked piece when giving the lighter blows when straightening.
