Is this a good knife?

I got a great looking knife recently, it was bought in Sweden but I don't have a clue if it's any good for outdoor use...
The guy who gave it to me did say it was completely hand made but didn't know anything else about it, so is it just a knife to hang on my wall or does it look like one that's supposed to be used? Wouldn't like to ruin it, since it is pretty ;) but if it's meant to be used, I'd be more than happy to... :)
And does anyone happen to know the model or the used materials?
The flat part of the knife is covered in some black stuff (I assume from the fire in which it was forged or something?)

I would guess that the handle is:brass, birch bark/leather, antler, leather, antler,bb/l, a block of birch (?), then the reverse up to the final piece of gray antler (?).
Has the tang been peened over to hold it all together?

It looks good to me although I am no expert. It depends on the steel used. Short of testing the hardness you could try putting an edge on it and see how it does when you use it.

Personally I tend to use my knives rather than collect them. If it were me I would use it, although you are right, it is pretty.

Cheers,
Steve

The little trrad knife looks like it may have a PT line. If that's the case it could well be a Lauri PT or PTX. Have a look and see if the blade length is 77mm.

Although the Lauri blades are quite cheap to buy they are very good little blades, initially it may rust a bit (they have a tendency to do that as they are high carbon), but after the initial bit they work very nicely.

looks good to me, most6 scandinavian blades are good enough to use, especially the pnes from scandinavia- remember these area people who have a traditionof using kknives as tools and who still do so today

That knife looks good to me. It looks like a Wood Jewel to me....take a look at the Carving knife in this link from Ragweed Forge.

http://www.ragweedforge.com/WoodJewelCatalog.html

Depending on the blade length I think you have one of these.

I have one of these (no longer listed on Ragweed's site) that is a very nicely done knife.

MIne is the carving knife with firesteel

Here is what Ragweed says about these:

Wood Jewel knives are made in the small town of Kolari, Finland. Kolari is located in the far north of Finland, north of the artic circle, and well into Finnish Lappland. The knives reflect the Sami styles and tradtions. They are designed by Kauko Raatiniemi, and the handles are assembled from multiple pieces of reindeer antler and curly birch. The selection of wood grain seems unusually nice. The sheaths are also in the Sami tradition, done in the deep pouch style that hangs from a twisted thong. Except as noted, the blades are .8% high carbon steel, hardened to about 59 on the Rockwell scale.

The sheath looks identical to the ones used with those Wood Jewel knifes, so it must be one of those right? Or is it used by others as well? The length of the knife is 77mm, so maybe a Lauri after all, Leon-1?
Happy to hear it'll be a usable knife at least :) I'll start using it once I've learnt how I should, in other words: once I ruined my Mora ;)

Thanks a lot for all replies folks!

The sheath is the same and I think that it is unlikely that any other manufacturer would use that design and configuration. The style of the knife is the same as the Wood Jewels too, so I think with a pretty high degree of confidence you have a Wood Jewel.

I would use it well as the one I have seems more than up to the tasks and is quite pleasing to use as well.

Enjoy.
