I've been living out of a rucksack (two actually) for about 3 years across 7 countries. If you're moving about a lot, you'll soon wish you'd taken bmartin1uk's advice and halved your kit! A good piece of advice I've come across is to take half your stuff but twice the cash. Also, where in the world you plan to be travelling matter immensely. But purely hypothetically for nowhere in particular, I'd take:

General Travel
1 pair of shorts
1 pair of trousers
2 t-shirts
1 jumper
1 rain jacket
3 boxer shorts
3 pairs of socks
shoes (softstar moccasins and vibrams)
compact camera
laptop
kindle
sewing kit
toothbrush and floss
USB stick with travel docs (passport, travel insurance, tickets, etc)
journal and pen

Bushcraft stuff
leatherman wave
folding saw
spoon knife
ben orford woodlander

Most destinations around the world have accommodation near or in the pretty places we want to visit. If you want to pick up cheap camping gear, look around the areas with backpacker accommodation. In Bangkok there are loads of stalls selling all the mosquito nets, tents and sleeping bags people packed but realised they'd never use.
