Well, not really but it would sure be nice to make the sort of money that they do. I'm back from getting just one filling. It cost me $182:yikesabout 115 pounds) The sad part? When things are really hurting, I would have paid anything to get it fixed, so I guess they don't charge that much I suppose Still, I wonder if perhaps they don't overdo the freezing sometimes as I'm currently gnawing my lip off and am having trouble blinking

I sacked my last dentist after that carry on and haven't been able to find a new one since, the whole system is in a mess over here unless you can afford to go private. I might just get all my work done on holidays now and claim it back.

Currently got three chipped molars and it's only a matter of time before I'm in agony again, ho hum

I just had 2 filled this week. My estimated co-pay was $92 US for both. I really didn't feel any pain from them though; my dentist found the cavities on my semi-annual cleaning and check-up.

I was referred to a "specialist" dentist for root canal after previous root canal treatment on a tooth failed after a further (4th) root was discovered. 45 mins and £640 later, job done!

A few years ago when I got my last crown (I have a total of 12 plus an implant) my cost-share was $700 (about 525 pounds) With a 50% cost share (for that particular procedure) the total cost would have been $1400 (about 1050 pounds)

It's quite a lot cheaper than going private, We have NHS dentists for the three of us, Little one (13) is free treatment, check ups every six months for myself and SWMBO are £17 (ish) each.

There are three standard charges for all NHS dental treatments. This makes it easier to know how much you may need to pay for the care you receive.
Band 1 - This covers an examination, diagnosis (eg: x-rays), advice on how to prevent future problems, and a scale and polish if needed. Urgent treatment when you need to see a dentist immediately is also a Band 1 charge. This charge for this level of treatment is £17.50 in England and £12.00 in Wales.

Band 2 - This covers everything listed in Band 1, above, plus any further treatment such as fillings, root canal work or if your dentist needs to take out one or more of your teeth. This charge for this level of treatment is £48.00 in England and £39.00 in Wales.

Band 3 - This covers everything listed in Bands 1 and 2 above, plus crowns, dentures or bridges. This treatment charge is £209.00 in England and £177.00 in Wales.

Good old NHS, needs to be sorted though, it is straining under the extra pressures people expect from it, after all the original presis is a long way down the road now, and so much of it wasn't even thought of when it started.

Just reading this thread reminded me of something that might be useful to folks.

A few years back, my wife broke a crown when we were away camping. Miles from anywhere, Saturday night on a bank holiday weekend. Drove to the nearest town the following morning only to be directed to another town a few miles further on. Found a phone number for the dentist but still had to wait until Tuesday then pay an absolute fortune to get it fixed.

I now keep a pack of temp tooth filler in my big first aid kit as well as another one in the car kit. Give your teeth/mouth a quick clean, cut of a little bit of the filler and roll it in a ball before pressing it into the gap. Sets really quickly and kills the pain pretty rapid too. After an hour or so you can eat/drink/be merry.

This type is already mixed and ready to be used. Avoid the types which have a sachet of powder and some solution as they're a pain to use and to get the consistency right, especially if you're in pain at the time.

They will last for a few days if needs be and are great for short term relief till you can get to a dentist.

Due to being on the wrong end of a kung-fu competition in my youth, i am in need of 9 dental implants... £15,000 in the uk, £2000 in the best hospital in Bombay, with a professor of dental surgery, full nursing care. I am going to go there for a holiday when i have the time/cash.

Aunt of mine done exactly the same as you Sandsnakes, her's was about £10k over here and £1500 out there so she went to Goa for three weeks and had teeth done at the same time, crazy, and the work was as good if not better than you'd get over here.

Dentists round my way are rarer than rocking horse manure, I haven't seen one for at least 10 years and need to badly but can't afford private and the NHS ones haven't taken on any patients in this area for the last 3 years I missed the last take on by a week Wouldn't mind but they make a fortune for hurting people and ya still can't get one!

A lot of PCTs have dental places that you can go to, might be worth a call to your local PCT Offices to see what they can do.

Someone I was talking to the other day said they were refused treatment as their teeth were too bad. They sure ain't gonna get any better by themselves! :yikes:
