Sat down with my daughter and a program with one Mr Mears come on the telly. Now, she's not ignorant in the ways of the bushcrafter - she's only 12 but can do a few bits from some plant ids to lighting fire with flint and steel. So imagine my horror when she comes out with the following:

"Oh, I much prefer Bear Grylls"

:yikes:

Now - no Ray v Bear discussion. Just answer the question.

Have I failed as a father?

:(

She's getting to that age by the sound of things

Maybe she meant to say "Oh, I much prefer looking at Bear Grylls"

Nah.

The fact that your asking the question shows a clear headed approach to paternal responsibility.

Sign of the times i'm afraid. I used to get asked about Ray on every course i ran now its Bear. Both make good telly.

I have a similar conversation with my wife.

Me: Ray Mears obviously has superior skill and knowledge.
Mrs: Yeah but Bear Grylls is well fit though.
Me: But who would you rather be in a survival situation with?
Mrs: I'd cuddle up with Bear Grylls...
Me: Oh forget it.

Nah, she's at the rebelious stage. She knows that what she said would wind you up.

Perfectly natural behaviour, with a lot worse to come.:p

Oh I know that - her elder sister sneers at the very prospect of her wierdo dad taking her for a walk in the woods!

It's karma - all karma - just ask my parents...

I remember waking my daughter to see a fox in the garden at about that age

A few years previously she had sat cuddled on my knee wrapped in blankets when I took her out at about eleven pm to watch bats flying through the garden

She glanced at the fox and enquired

"and this affects me how?"

<sigh>

Ray has a more mature approach which appeals to the mature people. Bear is the opposite plus he appeals to the ladies by the sounds of it.

Don't worry about it mate, natural selection in all its twisted glory.

Not wanting to get splinters in an sensitive area I would have to say that you have quite obviously failed in part of your parental duties and should rectify this immediately.

Whilst you are doing it you should point out that WWF wrestling is staged as well as Bears programmes are in the same ballpark:)

You have raised your child to have the confidence to express herself, and to speak her mind openly, irrespective of the fact that her answer may not be to your liking.

That is 100% success!

Far better to have honesty and strength of character, than appeasement.

Having recently showed my kids the correct path, I can only assume you are neglecting your duties as a father and need to sit her down n watch the u tube vids which show Bears true colours!!! one day bear the next its a life of crime and heroin addiction.
