I forged this fire steel from an old file the other day and it works great.

In the tin i have char cloth,a birch bark tinder tube,a roll of birch bark,fat wood,natural string,flint and petrified wood.

You need to heat it up first.About a bright red/orange colour should do.

I heat it up in my forge until it glows a bright orange-red and bend it with a couple of pairs of pliers,if im doing a more elaberate design ill bend it around a round bar.

Did you quench it after to re-harden it and re-align the carbon deposits?

Yes i qenched it in brine and then heated the handle part whilst holding the striking edge to temper it as much as i could with out tempering the striking edge.
