Heres my contribution as a new member.
I've been listening to the debate re. knives and wont be changing my little Gerber E-Z out for the following reasons:
Knife related crime has not increased in the UK, it appears to because of the media attention that it now recieves.
If more people are now carrying knives and the number of crimes has remained the same then surely the majority of people carrying knives are law abiding?
Thomas Jefferson wrote the following '"Those who desire to give up Freedom in order to gain Security, will not have, nor do they deserve, either one."
So how about prosecuting criminals and leaving legitimate users alone.
The majority of knives used in assaults are domestic kitchen knives and used inthe home, not pocket folders or even bushcraft or hunting knives.
On a hook over my desk is the little Richards, Sheffield folder that my Grandfather gave to me when I was 7 years old (thats about 40 years ago) and I've caried a pocket knife ever since, even in school that does not make me a criminal, does it?
Anyhow thats of my chest.
By the way anyone got an idiot proof reciepe for damper bread, mine always smells and looks good but will never cook thru.

As you can see, Lurch, there're pletny of options! I also avoid tactical looking penknives, to avoid the hassle that goes with them. I have a 2" sheffield penknife (cost £17.50, made by Rogers, I think.) that I dicovered too late is not really up to much for wood carving and was not well built. That said, the manufacturer fixed it and sorted out the edge, which is more than many overseas manufacturers would do.

My local surplus shop has the british army claspknives for £8.99 that are perfectly legal and tougher than any lock knife. The swiss army knife soldier model (the actual knife used by the swiss army) has a bigger, thicker, stronger blade than all of the others, but is less bulky because it only has a can opener and awl in addition to the blade. The non-locking opinel someone suggested will work as well as anything at ten times the price.

spyderco pride (looks much less agressive than UKPK) and you can remove the flag of better still get one with a spyder on it, or replace the aluminium with wood.

Another vote for the Vic Farmer despite it's bulkiness.....though I'm all anticipation for Fallk's non-locking version of the U2 :red:

For big and beefy there's the shing penknife, not my thing but well made

I have two of these, with the D2 blade.

Excellent little knife, with a blade of 2.5/8"...

However, I was up in Boston, MA last weekend, and when I went into the US Navy base to see the USS constitution, there was a sign that mentioned it is a federal offence to bring a weapon into the base, with a note to clarify that a knife over 2.1/2" is considered a weapon.

The limit of 3" in the UK for the purposes of S.139 will not do you for travelling.

Face it, Lurch, you need more than one non-locking pocket folder. Probably more than six or seven. Ask Hoodoo. :D

For me it just has to be the sak. I use one all the time, either a spartan or a camper, mostly for the can opener and the corkscrew. :) The spartan can't, imo, be considered bulky.

I'll stick with my WW2 British Army style pocket knife.

Yes! That is so true! And that is my totally unbiased opinion although seven seems a might few. :)

Opinel 5 has a 2 3/8" blade and no locking ring.
I used to have a SAK that just had one blade, that was pretty good.

I like Opinels; but are Opinels without a locking ring safe? I nearly chopped me finger off a couple of times when I forgot to lock mine.
