Hello,

How do you tell the difference between a dwarf elder and a non-dwarf elder?

How poisonous is the dwarf elder?

The dwarf elder

Is much more dangerous than the non dwarf elder

However. The plant dwarf elder (Sambacus ebulus) is a herbaceous plant with no woody stems, while the common elder (Sambacus nigra) is a large bush or small tree with a hardwood stem or trunk.

My little friend with the axe doesn't seem to tote a name but Danewort looks appropriate doen't it?

But Sambucus ebulus is also Danewort. Herbal sites seem to describe various powerful medicines made from it. One site suggests it has cyanide in its leaves. Do a Google and see what you think.

Excellent, so the elder I have in my garden (about 5m high & it has a woody stem) is a non dwarf elder!

Thanks!
