Best way of removing brambles in my experience is a slasher or a sickle for clearance coupled with an 18" metal spike. It really helps lever out the bulb and lets you chase down the taproot. Anything with a wooden handle is simply not up to bramble rooting, you just need more leverage than it can "handle".
 
Pleased to report that it's handling the job remarkably well - highly recommended piece of kit. I used it to chop through a 3" hazel log the other day too - it's a versatile piece of equipment!
