This weekend I commited the worst crime possible for a bushcrafter - I lent my axe!

Granted it was to my Dad - all his life a joiner and well used to working with sharps BUT...
I should have known better!

The result a shaft split all the way down its length and a chunk missing from the edge of the head! :(

To be fair to him he came straight to me and bought me a new one, :D but what if anything can I do with the damaged one? It seems such a shame to throw it away!

Looking for suggestions ...

I must admit I'm surprised it broke off like that - I suppose if he hit concrete or something very hard but still......

I'd just round off the broken corner and keep using it myself - bit of work with a hacksaw and a file but not impossible - or grind it if you have the patience to keep it cool enough.

Time to buy a cheap B&Q/Fiskars axe, solely for lending out to other peeps? *

Would be interesting to see what GB has to say about it..

Use to have a few knackered heads (usually lost their temper) as they're still useful for cutting roots.

* Though of course don't need one now, you've got this to lend out :D

the exact same thing happened when I got my wildlife hatchet! That was back when light My fire were the only people selling them here. They told me to send it back to Gransfors in Sweden and a replacement came almost by return of post :)

One of those axes should not do that: for one thing they are too soft!

I think Dave's right. A dink out of the cutting edge sure - but not a break like that. Why not send GB an e-mail? They can only say no.

I have sent an e-mail to GB - now I guess its wait and see time.

If nothing comes of it it will round of the damaged section, re shaft it and use it with Scouts.

Thanks for all the advice!

...Now that is bloody scary.

I'd suggest giving it to your pop as a Xmas gift :D

..Maybe that only works in my family.

Pop wanted the best electric knife sharpener I could afford for his kitchen knives (I know, I know).

So I bought him a carborundom stone :lmao:

I had a problem with a GB product a couple of years ago. E-mailed them about it and a replacement came back by return. No issues no questions.:D

I had exactly the same, all I done ask how to tighten the shaft, and they sent me a new SFA. You can't get better service than theirs.:)

I bet it doesn't cover hitting brickwork when you miss the bush that you are trimming! :banghead:

 Oh dear! Buy a nice little pruning saw for him from Aldi's for £3 and dump that new axe he bought you and buy a decent Morris Billhook! :p You'll never look back! :D

We dedicated Traditional billhook swingers need to start a campaign to rid ourselves of axes and show the uninitiated the light! :D
