I saw this great knife sharpener on the net and though id buy one to try.

AMAZING

you can actually see the metal shavings coming off if you look closly and you only have to strike your knife down it about 3 times and its v. sharp again

Given you can see what is, in sharpening terms, a huge amount of steel being removed - how long do you think your knife is going to exist with constant use of that? Fair enough with a Mora, the abuse is not going to be expensive to replace, but a more valuable knife I'd keep well away from those.

Yes i agree with you on that i wouldnt use this on a more valuable knife

Oh I love chewing great hunks of steel off my blades! I use this kind of sharpener to quickly wear back a blade that has a serious ding in the edge so that I can put a real edge on with my diamonds and leather. These sharpeners are also good for knives I use for 'abuse' work - cutting cardboard and plastic wrapping, carpet etc - that quickly ruins a fine edge. Use one on a good knife? On a Damascus? On a knife I like?

As for things like carpet & the like, I tend to go for Stanley blades for that. Weaning myself off using them for leatherwork these days.

I tried the Bladetech once, but its no substitute for learning the art of proper sharpening and stropping.
