A friend of mine had his house burgled a while back and one of the items stolen was his main knife that his grandad gave him. He said he wanted to replace it with something similar so after a chat in the pub a drawing followed for me to work to. I think the knife he used to have was a bit like a scout knife with a stacked handle. A bit of scandi style blade and handle crept into the design and I disapeared for a few days to make the fella up.

Lauri carbon 120mm. Big but a kind of halfway house between lekku/puukko.
Handle(24 sections) 110mm, local Birch bark, dyed brown leather, brass bolster (a pain to make but glad I did) and Yew for the main section and end peice. Soaked in raw linseed and finished with bri-wax.
I riveted over the end of the tang for a change too.

Should get the sheath made up before xmas eve and he can pick it up then. Reckon a few malts might go down too!

The colours blended into each other more than I thought they would, but I quite like that. Going to try something like this again for myself using buffalo horn instead of leather and frame the bark with nickel silver, using a knife ive forged.

Hope you like,

Addo :)

Great work as always Addo! Shame your mate's knife got twoc'd, he'll never be able to replace his grandad's but a knife made by a mate will be something he'll always cherish as well! Nice gesture fella. How you getting on with the forging? Have you had a chance to have a bash yet? Looking forward to seeing the one you do for yourself out of horn and nickel silver, sounds a reet cracker!

Thats a fine piece of work I like the way the colours complement each other. Nice finish. Bolsters are hard for Lauris arent they which is why I have bought them recently.
What style of sheath do you have in mind.

Cheers Chad and all :)

Heres the first forged knife ive started, but I removed stock from this one for the stick tang as it was going to be a full tang. Next mission is to use this as a template/guide to forge out the tang and reduce grinding, and complete the whole process on my own as I had help on this one, as we used a car suspension spring steel, so it was easyer to have one holding and moving and one with the sledge to flatten.
The bevels will be scandi ground when finished, but I'll try part forging those too.

Thanks Alf, probably a fold over leather type with a firesteel holder, and dangler belt loop. Getting the hang of these and I think he wants the option of wearing without the dangler so less movement when working in woodland.

When Ive more time to practice i'd like to try other types though and improve on my Scandi sheath, as I think it was a fluke that the last one went so well

That forged blade you did looks great! Even if you did have someone hold it whilst you bashed it it's spot on for a first attempt...you just using a bit of railroad track for an anvil then? I'm going to aquire a piece soon enough I hope and I've got a week off after xmas, I want to make a forge in my backyard and get on with it! Nice one mate!
