    Norwich and Norfolk group?

"too far for some to travel"?with the greatest respect Rappleby the 'East Anglian Group' was never intended to be a group that only met at one venue.Kevin,& to a lesser extent myself, kick started this by organising weekends around the Bury area because Kevin had found a suitable site that was...

    Forest gardening?

Have a look at the Permaculture Magazines site www.permaculture.co.uk .There's quite a few books on the subject dealing with growing food using the ecological principles of a natural woodland. Not sure how useful it will be for where you are but it's a good starting point. There might even be some...

    Woods Weekend

Animals You would like to see in the wild

I wouldn't need to travel far to see the animal I would most like to see in the wild at the moment.I've seen signs of otters just 1/2 mile from my house.I've found tracks & spraints under a road bridge by the local river & some neighbours have found half eaten carp left by their small lake about...

    Rawhide

Thanks for all the leads, folks.I'll have another look at the dog chews.I bought a selection including a rather nasty one made up into a moccasin/slipper which I thought would be easier to spiral cut into long strips but it kept snapping.I'll give the knotted bone a try next.Should rawhide be...

    Rawhide

Anyone any idea where I can get rawhide? I'm wanting to use rawhide to fix a flint spear head (just been on a flintknapping workshop with John Lord) onto a shaft.I've looked at the rawhide petshops sell as dog chews but this seems to be of variable thickness & is too weak.

At what age should kids start carving?

Start them young! My son(5yrs) is quite happy sitting with a small pen-knife taking the bark off sticks & sharpening. We've talked about the dangers together & he is never allowed to use his knife when I'm not around.Yes,he has cut himself once so far-this in itself is an important lesson after...

    Which Dutch Oven???

Perhaps the question should be which 'style' of Dutch oven. Some have domed lids like a conventional cookpot & were more intended for use on a stove others have dished lids so that you could cover then with embers for outside use. Some even have short legs making them suitable for standing in a...

    Freezer full of rabbit

Our local game dealer is still advertising for rabbits......Noticed a fair few rabbits about with myxamatosis so I guess the local population is going to take a dive again anyway.Had just finished rabbit fencing my garden last year when myxi last struck-went from being over-run to none in a few...

    Freezer full of rabbit

Getting a free source of rabbits at the moment thanks to local hunters. They seem to be coming round every Monday evening. After the first time they came round shooting in my local fields I found that they had just left everything they had shot.Unfortunately my initial discoverys were a little...

    help please.......sycamore & cherry

I like my spoons, bowls, etc.to have some character therefore cherry has to be my fave wood for carving at the mo.I've been using sections from the same fallen tree in my local woods for the past 3 yrs.Yes, it is harder to carve than some other woods but I find the finish & end result very...

    Bad year for Crab Apples?

Seems to go like this some years.Recently found a crab apple with plenty on so keep looking around. The Bramley in my garden has had very few fruit this year but was laden last. The pears,on the other hand, are weighed down with fruit when there was virtually nothing last season.Plenty of...

    Superstitions in bushcraft

Had to give this one some thought....then realised there were a few!Breaking a bannock rather than cutting it,saluting/spitting at magpies(depends on the company-have actually given this one up after seeing 32 magpies in one tree!! ),opening packets the 'right' end(not restricted to...

    East Anglia Group!

Rappleby, park up on the gravelled area just inside the double gates. We may be able to park nearer to our site,it just depends how the rest of the site is laid out on the day(i.e.where the scouts are.)We should be able to unload nearer even if we then have to move our vehicles back to the main...
