    Raising wildlife

Anyone else done it? Last year was quiet with just a woodpigeon and a robin too look after but the year before I ended up with eight birds and a hedgehog. My first was a newly hatched woodpigeon that literally landed at my feet, someone then gave me a finch and then the vets started handing...

    hare piece

I buried a hares head about 10 inches down in the garden in November. Any idea how long before it's a reasonably clean skull? It's a clay soil relatively neutral if that helps. Realgar

    Bodhran

I've never used it - just can't get the technique right, it was newly skinned with proper goat when I bought it. Comes with a Yew wood beater. It has a cross piece. I can Email photos. Forty five quid?

    Theft of fire!

http://www.brunching.com/copyfire.html OK so it's a spoof about copyright laws but I liked it..

    Typical

After a month of eating nothing but game, I had some nice simple well cooked fish and the next morning I couldn't keep anything down and the world was falling out of my bottom. Maybe it was too bland.

    DEFRA wildlife admin

Does anyone have a phone number for them that works? the numbers I've tried ( off their own site - 0845 6014523 ) don't and I need a bit of info over a licensing issue, it's the wildlife managment team I need to speak to. cheers Realgar

    metal for flint and steel

what's the best scavangable source for metal to make myself a striker? I know some are better than others. Hacksaw blade, rebar, new nails, ancient square nails? that pretty much sums up my sources of iron at the moment. Realgar

    ceramic knives

anyone tried them? Just a gimmick or really worth it in the kitchen? Realgar

Ink! ( the skin kind )

Anyone here been inked? I'm sketching out the design for my fourth tattoo at the moment, funny how quickly the memory of four hours in the tattooists chair fades so easily ( mind you she is a very attractive tattooist ). Realgar

    sack patterns

My little hemp daysack is getting knackered, anyone got patterns for making a new one ? - I've got a lot of denim off cuts that might come in handy and I quite enjoyed making myself a camera bag the other day. should I really be getting into sewing? Realgar

    Svalbard

I'm thinking holiday once the divorce is out of the way and the money from the house sale comes through. I like cold climates, I've been to the Ice Hotel but it's not enough. the Svalbard or Siberia, maybe Greenland, anyone been to any of those? Hmm done 24 hour darkness, I wonder what 24 hour...

    blewitts

Anything I can possibly confuse the field and wood blewitts with? are they a good fungus for drying? I'm 100% sure I've got the id right but it pays to be paranoid with fungi.

    cutlers rivets

How do I use them? I've nearly got my hazel handle sections ready, from what I can tell you just slip them through the holes and then hammer the narrow end with a punch until it stretches out enough to stay in place. The blade's an old Camillus of a rather odd shape - the blade itself is a...

    Woops - metal smelting

Tried a test smelt of some of my galena in a clay crucible, didn't get any lead but the ore reacted with the clay to produce a glaze with a curious yellow tint. I stuck it under UV and it glows like a firefly. I must take the crucible into work and wave it under a geiger tube - thorium or...

    Whips

Ok so Indy was on the other night. I've always wanted to learn the whip since my reenactment days. Is the stuff they did in the film even remotely possible with a real whip and no stuntmen? If I get one I'll have to make it - have you seen the price of those things? I thought it might do for...

    Other tinder fungi

So there's cramp balls which stink and burn a bit to quick to keep an ember going and horse hoof fungus which doesn't grow round here. Any other fungi that I could use to make some sort of amadou? I've tried birch polypore but whilst it's good for polishing things it don't burn too well...

    zippo fuels

Before I ruin my lighter, will a zippo run ok on ethanol? Petrol makes a pipe taste unpleasant and I won't touch those blow torch style lighters since one exploded in my hand.

    Walnuts

Looks like it's going to be a good season for them this. I preserve a load in honey, any other methods of long term storage? The 'husks' with their powerful staining ability - is that really iodine in them or is it just coincidence that they smell of iodine and stain yellow? Realgar

    Hare

I'm not planning to hunt it myself - not yet anyway. Couple of questions - what are the hare stocks like - can they tolerate the odd bit of eating? Second, what's it like? I'm a regular to rabbit and most other game ( even puffin once ) but what does it compare to? Next I have to persuade my...
