Are you a GEARDO?

  • Hey Guest, Early bird pricing on the Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August) available until March 31st, we'd love you to come. PLEASE CLICK HERE to early bird price and get more information.
I heard the term GEARDO recently and it tickled me. It went on to say that the term is applied to those strange people who have huge amounts of gear and continue to accumulate even more. So there's the question; Are you? or are you not a geardo?
Depends. I do like to try new stuff, but don't over do it. There has to be a reason to try something new. That normally being other gear of the same type having drawbacks, or falling short, or failing. But i then sell on/ trade/give away the obsolete stuff. if still in good nick.

You'd think i'd have loads knives, being a maker, but i dont. I have a couple of folders, a dedicated wood carver, a bushy, a machete, and the standard kitchen set up. Only have one axe atm too, but had dozens.

I used to get ideas in my head, where i could see me needing something for some reason, but then dont need it and off it pops. I have got wiser over time, less impulsive, don't buy things just because i think its a good idea at the time. Happy with what i have now, for what i need.

The only exception being rum. Always need more of that.

It depends… I’m pretty minimalist in some of the gear I take on trips and I like to use the same things for many different scenarios. Eg my cooking kit hasn’t changed in about 12 years now, I’ve figured out what really works and very happy with it all.

However…. I do have a rather large axe collection and several land rovers too!

I'm definitely a 'geardo'. First world problems eh!

Back in January of this year, I pledged to myself that I wouldn't buy anymore kit. I told myself that I really didn't need anything else and that I was already very well equipped for any camping adventure. All that was very true, but...

...it didn't last long. In no particular order, I bought a Victorinox Forrester, two multimat sleeping pads, a sheepskin, titanium frying pan and kettle, petromax frying pan, a mountain bike that I went on to configure for bikepacking adventures, a couple of water bottles, two stoves, a lovely thermarest stuff sack pillow, a replacement british army bivvy bag, a second replacement bivvy bag (because the first was purchased while inebriated and was the wrong spec). So it's fair to say that the promise I'd made to myself in January didn't go well!

Having just jotted that down, I find that rather daunting and financially quite reckless. Although, some of those purchases were financed by me selling off other stuff so there is definitely some balance.

Next year however, I need to do better, sell off the unused kit. I might even donate the proceeds from said sale to the same charity that gets all my youtube revenue.

I'm in recovery, taking one day at a time.....the struggle is real

I was laughing at the term Geardo and identified. The truth is I am a bit of a minimalist and practical; ie i have a mora companion and a swiss army knife, 1 axe, 1 saw. I live in the van a lot of the time and there no room for things I dont need every day. The subject of arrows came up for me because I am getting decent at archery and so destroy a couple or 3 arrows a week. I have now sent off for blank shafts and vanes and I am gona make my own because 1. its a good skill to have 2. its cheaper and 3. I get to reuse tips and flights that would other wise be useless. I counted the spare tips I had and there were 40. That is 40 arrows I have demolished. So to sum it all up. i can easilly become a geardo but I do pretty well keeping myself in check. x

Guilty since the divorce. Decided that I am going to get back into some serious walking and camping, that most of my gear was very old and need to upgrade.
Nearly everything is bought second hand, but I do know that its become a bit of a coping/distraction thing. Bought a few things just on spec because the opportunity/price came up.
But my not -so-latent hoarding instinct prevents me from selling all the excess rucksacks, cookers, sleeping bag emporium etc etc. Luckily I do not have the knife/lights affliction, only bought 2 since joining this site.
( Work lights aside.)
I do rather hanker for a couple of storm lanterns, but purely for the aesthetic decorative use at home. My very old tilley lamp is a only a noisy but bright power-loss contingency item.

I think we can all relate to this, GEARDO, GAS proper tickled me. I had to operate on the budget end of the scale for many years and so my kit was both in terms of cost and volume was very firmly at the budget end, ninety five percent surplus kit. Then about ten years back i was a bit more fortunate and i embraced my inner kit ***** and had at it a bit. And i enjoyed it too. Now due to monetary constraints I’ve once again had to seriously curtail my spending.
Let’s face it it’s nice, great even and very definitely great fun to use new kit, it’s enjoyable and i like it.
My name is CLEM and i am a raging GEARDO

And i am unashamed

Fantastic
The thing with that video is I know every single item he mentions and have owned most of them. The Caly 3 was a superb knife, I nearly severed two fingers with mine, it went through the flesh like it was butter. Beautiful to behold until the reality hit, narrowly escaped a skin graft, 5 weeks of extreme pain and bandaging followed.
