    well, i got my first folder when i was 6 or 7, and i started using fixed blades when i was 11 or 12, under supervision. i gave my son his own when he was 7 and he only uses it under supervision and after serious instruction. we'll see about fixed blades as he progresses. my point is i guess...

    well ive made an anvil from a length of RR track, and tongs from some mild steel pipe and an old (cheap) pair of slip joint plyers and im now working on the forge kind of a cross between maddaves 5 hour forge and tim lively's wash tub forge. dean

    i saw the episode with ray mears in lapland i thought he rubbed powdered birch bark (the inner bark) into the scratch marks he drew into the handle to produce the contrast and bring out the picture. anyone ever try doing this in birch? dean

    axe or machete?

    axe easy. with the axe i can cut trees, pare them out, shape them, use it as a hammer/mallet. :rolleyes: a machette can do all that cutting but try to drive a peg or stake and dont even mention driving wedges to split really big logs. :eek: dean

    gross aint it? its the same here in Newfoundland makes me sick when i walk into the woods and see a washing machine a mile back into the trees when it would have cost less and been easier to drop it at the land fill 10 minutes away. dean
