ray mears for uk honour

  • Hey Guest, Early bird pricing on the Summer Moot (29th July - 10th August) available until April 6th, we'd love you to come. PLEASE CLICK HERE to early bird price and get more information.
That's what I was getting at with the OBE remark - the system is broken really. I'm not sure how military medals work but rank shouldn't really come into it as far as the civilian honors are concerned.

dont think its a Civi honour Knight Hood means your supposed to turn up on a horse, in a tin can with a big sword n all the peasants you protect with you when the Queen has a spot of bother

teh labour gov did get relaxed trying to spread the list by including Grandfathers and dinner ladies etc and reduce the military officers dont know if its automatic these days and pretty much most units and mid rank officers have done an active tour or 10 over the last 20 yrs

military Medals work on what you did regardless of rank so the lowest rank can receive the highest award VC (however the criteria is pretty tight and most are awarded posthumously ) and only 13 have been handed out since the end of WW2 which is amazing considering the army have only had 1yr since WW2 where they havent been in a shooting conflict and WW1 and 2 lasted only 10yrs

any way enough digression

sounds fair enough, not many of us get medals just for doing what we chose and are paid for.

actually quite a lot of industries do their own little awards systems basically for just doing their job
tho they are less likely to be shot or captured and beheaded with a blunt swiss army knife (yes it has happened not a video the BBC could put out)

All the senior military and government roles get an honour as standard, hence ambassadors and generals are normally 'sir'. The awards that anoy me are for sportsmen who achieve success - it's not like they were training for or being paid for that .... Current emphasis is on those contributing to 'big society' - dinner ladies and shop volunteers seem to be the thing.

I would have no problem backing an award on the basis of 'contribution to the public awarness of nature and survival through the popularisation of bushcraft' or something similar.

BCUK should do some annual awards.

Let's get busy with the Acronyms (thread hijack warning)

As a bushcrafter thats only a natural opinion.

But bushcrafters are miniscule in numbers in the UK. Have a look at it from outside of the bushcraft bubble. Ray who????? :)

I honestly believe Bear Grylls is more deserving of honours for the tons of charity work he has done and for his involvement in the scouts. Basically he helps others where Ray doesn't.

You might be supprised Bill how many folk know who he is and what he does but have absolutely no interest in going bushcraft camping themselves I've met a good few people like that, mention bushcraft and you get a blank stare mention Ray Mears and its "Oh right". I remember one nurse in particular who was an avid fan, had the books, watched the programmes and the DVD's but when I asked how often she went camping the answer was along the lines of "Sod that I want four star". My wife like the guy but would not spend time in the woods although she is now very happy to stay on a site as I've purchased a shed load of glamping kit :)

Far to many folk who i have spoke to have looked at me blankly when i said i was into bushcraft. Whats that they would ask, so i would ask if they have ever seen Ray mears on the TV. Answer was generally no. At the last engineering place i worked, not one person on my shift had a clue what i was on about.

Some folk will have seen Ray, obviously. But the greater percentage haven't. Its just not most folks cup of tea in todays world. That unfortunately is a sad fact.

3 cheers for Ray!!!! But having thought long and hard - I can't think of any plausable reason for him to get any form of "Gong". He is well paid and is fortuante enough to be able to front his own company whilst being employed by various TV stations !!! Great exposure :D

Don’t be put off, lots of people don’t rate Ray as it is fashionable to knock successful people or people who get paid to do their chosen hobby that the envious like to think they could do better.

:surrender: fair cop, mind you they aint publicly funded although I suspect the honours system is probably pretty cheap to run and good value in terms of raising national pride, publicity and status abroad etc.

Must be a Northern thing mate;), the Welsh folks seem to know him, mention his name and the light goes on and they have an idea what you are talking about. From the mob I've talked with they watch the shows because to many its a 'nature' programme.

Slightly OT there is a taxi driver over in Merthyr who did two or three courses with Ray "I loved the courses but the wife won't come so I don't go camping"... still he enjoyed himself.

Opinion was sought and given. Just because some people disagree doesnt mean you should give up on your idea.
