I like the guy, but I'm not sure he deserves an honour - but then I'm at odds with the honours system anyway. To me being good at your job shouldn't really get you an honour regardless of whether it's in the public eye or not. You need to bring a real benefit and contribution to our society.

How about all the people able to make a living fron bushcraft and outdoor activities because the whole subject is in the public consciousness? Twenty odd years ago it was very different.

Personally I think he qualifies.

I'm not sure if people are agreeing with me not? Personally I don't think either of those people deserved knighthoods (although Jimmy Saville did do a lot of Marathons for charity in his time)..... but both were given them due to popular public pressure. Ancient Celebs... the grannies love 'em.

As a bushcrafter thats only a natural opinion.

But bushcrafters are miniscule in numbers in the UK. Have a look at it from outside of the bushcraft bubble. Ray who????? :)

I honestly believe Bear Grylls is more deserving of honours for the tons of charity work he has done and for his involvement in the scouts. Basically he helps others where Ray doesn't.

That's a good point, well made.

Let's hope this doesn't turn into another "Ray versus Bear" punchup!

well criteria can be anything now

Cynthia Cowley, a lunchtime supervisor and caretaker at St James and St John Church of England School in Akeley, has been awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for her long and dedicated service to the school.Mrs Cowley, who has worked at the primary school for 33 years, was understandably taken aback when she received the news.
"I opened the letter and read the first paragraph and just sort of froze. I could not believe what I had read. I put the letter back in the envelope and I said to John [her husband] 'I'm going to work'," she told BBC News.

My mate got his MBE because he was a Major and commanded a unit in conflict (Iraq)

if he was a Colonel it would have been an OBE

Yes - Other Buggers Efforts.....

yes he was Driving Fuel trucks in Bosnia as a Lt (well navigating ;) ) but still had a few shot out from under him . And he does look after his guys

It is a bit strange tho that set Honers go to a set ranks for being there tho

Guess every body gets a service medal for being there

and you get the bravery medals for over and above stuff

I'm with Hillbill, nice bloke who has done a lot to raise interest in bushcraft but being popular in a small field ain't what the honours system is about. Most of the folk who are known names who get honours get them for charitable work, it's easy enough if you are a media figure to put your name to a charity and turn out for a couple of days a year, some do, some don't, those do do get recognised for it. It's maybe a common misconception that honours are just recognition of popularity.

That's what I was getting at with the OBE remark - the system is broken really. I'm not sure how military medals work but rank shouldn't really come into it as far as the civilian honors are concerned.
