I haven't been able to do much in the workshop over the last couple of weeks due to a silly hand injury but it has given me time so sort out a load of pics etc and get caught up with things.

Anyway this is a wee vice i made a while ago, it's designed to hold a knife in various positions when doing the final finishing / shaping of the the scales / handle.

Just need to bolt it to the bench and it's ready to go.

That's a neat idea :approve: .. and it protects the blade as well, and the fingers too, thinking of it.. Do those plastic knobs give enough pressure? What did you use inside the square tube to hold the blade?

The knobs give plenty of pressure, i used these levers at first to get more leverage but they are not required so i changed to the knobs and they work fine.

The blade is held between 2 pieces of "high quality polyethylene, tough and durable ,non-absorbent, odourless, non-toxic and it complies with all hygiene regulations",
(ie plastic chopping board - SWMBO is still wondering where it went :o :D )

Between the plastic and the knob is a piece of 3mm steel so that the plastic doesn't split.
I made one for a friend as well and he's already used it for shaping the scales on a wee Shing blade, they work even better than i expected.

I have a few projects on the go at the minute that will require a bit more work on the scales than normal so i thought i'd better build this first.

That is a neat and attractive design, you should do a run of them and sell them, nice job :)
Only you'd need to source the palstic from somewhere other than Rapidgirl's kitchen..... :lmao:

I was thinking about making a few but they are heavy and the postage might kill the idea, i will maybe look into it when i get caught up with some other work - few sheaths to get through first.

Great piece of work there - dies it have enough grip to handle peening a tang?

It wasn't designed for that and I havent tried but it might be OK for peening a tang.
The scales are against the plastic chopping board so the "grip" isn't an issue.

a knife vise along those lines is something that I have been meaning to make for years, but never seem to get around to . Despite being a fulltime knifemaker for the last 5 years, I still just use a block of wood and a pair of molegrips! :D
