I'll be headed off to my woodland in about an hour (waiting for an upload to finish, which has taken about 15 hours so far and has about an hour remaining).

Still time for me to send details if anyone else wants to come.

Staying overnight and through the majority of tomorrow, fresh meal with fresh meat n' veg, lots of available green wood (which fell during the storms) for anyone who wants to grab some for carving (beech, birch, chestnut and I believe even a scots pine). Lots of firewood, plenty of trees for hanging or ground for tenting, wild badgers, deer, squirrel, pheasant etc. Tis all free :)

Anyway, shoot me a PM before 1PM if you want to come along :)

Don't see why we couldn't knock something like that up for the next meet.

On the subject of skills, I'm pretty rusty on tree identification, a bit cheeky I know, but I'm wondering if Chris could possibly do this at one of the meets?

I would be very interested in tree identification too,so can I be cheeky and ask to join in on this one if its going ahead please.

Tree ID would be a good one, as there must be a nice solection across the farm, I wonder if this would be best done when the leaves are out?

It is a bit easier to id trees when in leaf, not that bad in winter to be honest, when at college we had to as we could not really stop for half the year, you soon learn to look at the tree properly :)

For when the flowers appear I have a couple of very good plant keys which we can use to teach ourselves. If there are any sadists I have a good gras id book.

I would like to get a compass before the Feb meet as I would really like to join in with the compass and map reading skill share. obviously there are plenty to choose from, but I wondered if there was a sensibly priced decent quality compass which would be suitable for a novice. Any advice would be gratefully received.

You can't beat a Silva compass for simplicity and reliability, I've used one throughout my army years and still now for walking, best ones have the grid square and rulers as shown, there are lots of different ones of differing makes and gimmicks, no need to have some flip up sighting gadget, keep it simple but if you can get this one, (my opinion) http://www.mapandcompass.co.uk/Silv...s-79284.aspx?gclid=CP3tyL7C-LsCFfHItAod61kABQ

That's great, thanks guys. I was not sure if I would need the flip up type, presumably to line up with a tree or land mark to walk towards. Thanks for the advice, I will do some shopping :)

I would recommend the Silva Compass Expedition 4 as a good all round compass with all the facilities you will need, however, ensure the compass you do buy is in Degrees (360) and not Mils (64) ( Mils ones you'll find marked up as militaire/military/sas etc. and usually cheaper)

However, I will be extremely impressed if someone turns up wearing their Bata Wayfinders/Clarks Commandos for the skillshare!!

Today I have been doing some work on the SuffRAT and now have come up with an outline of an event, It will be a one nighter in Rendlesham, Starting Melton Station, lunch time, where a route will be started off, with a Grid ref to the next point, the route be made up of a number of Way Points and about 5km Long, this will be a wild camp.

On the second date there is a 14km route around the area working on the same basis....

The only Food you can take is a British Army RAT Pack for the event plus your water. and using the following kit, the idea is to be basic have a limited amount of food, use basic kit, and practice you navigation skills..

Rucksack
Tarp no larger then 3x3 and ridge line with pegs
Sleeping Bag
Roll Mat
British Army Hexi Burner
Mess Tins and or Crusader Cup
Knife Fork Spoon
Hygiene Kit
Knife/Axe/Saw
First Aid Kit and Prescribed Med’s

Map of area Compass, Pace Beads... No GPS UNITS allowed..

Nothing Else..

PM me for details,

Stu I have just looked at my Landranger map number 156 and Melton is right on the bottom edge with only a bit of the forest showing, the next map down is 169
