I would take the helve out of it and do the molasses trick on it to clean the rust off mate ...

Looks like a war department issued elwell felling axe. What weight? Looks around 6lb to me.

Nice Elwell, ripe for a restoration. Sorry Chris, can't make out any markings through the rust layer. Maybe something will show after cleaning.

The weight would be stamped near the makers mark. I think I can see a 4 under elwell, that would be the weight.

Blimey. you've got good eyes.......... I will clean it up a bit tomorrow and have a look, what ever it weighed new, it certainly weights less now as its a bit worn.

Dont use anything on it mate... you'll regret it once you see what molassas and a bit of paitance can do......its worth the wait

Thanks Stu. do I just chisel out the handle then? whats the best wood to use for the handle, I would like to try and carve one at one of the monthly meets.

Never heard of this molasses for de rusting, Ive used white vinegar for nuts and bolts for engines before replating though, that works well.

Ash is what you want, just happens that that is what we have in Price wood

Drill out the wedge from the top of the axe then just knock it back out, keeping as much as you can of the helve then you just copy the helve,

Ash is quite a good wood.. there is quite a bit of that at the site, also a nice English wood if you know what I mean, but the choice is really up to you...

I'm going to be spending this Saturday day and night on one of my permissions, and will be culling, butchering and cooking up one of the cockerels from my coop (I currently have 4 of the blasted things, and all they're good for is eating).

Anyone interested in joining me and perhaps (assuming you're interested) learning how to dispatch and butcher a chicken?
