Ah! I think I've got an article somewhere on a specific wolf pack that targets the salmon. If I recall they only ate the heads/brains and left the rest. I shall see if I can 'fish' it out. Hurr hurr!

Yes there is a parasite ( a worm I believe) in salmon that can be deadly to canines & some wolves, (particually in the coastal British Columbian rainforest,) have learned to eat just the heads where there is no parasite.

Cheers Goatboy....................... ..now how did you do that ? I've been trying for ages but it never seems to work.:(

Copy the http address of the video you want to embed (usually in the top right of your screen). Start your message and at the point you want the video to appear click on the little film roll icon in the message toolbar In the box that appears paste the address and click OK and hey presto the vid is in place. NOTE until the message is actually posted the address will appear as the address with "[VIDEO]" sans speach marks at the fore and end of the address.

Hope this works,
GB

i think the wolf has learned to hunt fish itself after watching and scavaging the remains left by the bear ..ie the head and guts -as the bears have learned to only eat the eggs of the salmon and or the the fleshy bits :) ............can,t see how they have learned what bits have worms in !!!!!

At a certain time the bears do the same thing. As it gets nearer to hybernating season they instintively concentrate on the highest fat content.

They don't. As in my above post they eat the whole fish early in the season but later switch to the fat bits (brains and skin) to store up fat for hybernation. They probably don't know why, it probably just tastes better to them (fatter/richer) later in the season.

Beautiful footage. Is it just me though? Or does that wolf look more like a coyote? He's awful thin (unmuscular) looking and long legged for a wolf. And traveling alone is an ordinary coyote trait whereas it's rare (if ever) in wolves.
