Wheres all the knife makers gone off of bcuk

  • BushMoot: Come along to the amazing Summer Moot 31st July - 5th August (extended Moot : 27th July - 8th August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
I think bushcraft has always had a kind of practical mindset.....we don't collect knives, but we use knives, sort of thing.
With that comes the corollory that if we have good knives, why buy more ?

I think the market became rather glutted, which was sore on Makers and only really newbies were on the look for knives.
I do agree though that folks looking for a specific knife were more than happy to hope to find someone selling one on and that they might get a bargain.

There is also the uncomfortable truth that in our modern UK having a knife is no longer perceived as an 'everyone has one' type thing. Posting them is an entire other issue too. I have knives I would happily pass along, but I won't post these days, so things hang fire until folks meet up.

BcUK ?
It's a very good thing :)
Tony set it up over twenty years ago. Forums rose and have fallen away, and yet this quiet bastion of sanity, of interesting conversation, of unparalleled advice and encouragement and happily shared knowledge just slowly evolves, is active and busy. It's still welcoming, it's still friendly, it's still full of interesting folks most of whom we'd happily put the kettle on for if we met, and offer to share a cuppa, might even find the chocolate digestives (have you tried the two ingredient peanut butter cookies though ? )

You are good company folks, accepting that everyone's different, yet comfortable in our shared humanity.

Bit of a chicken and egg situation for me. What comes first - sellers or buyers? Equally, what's the harm in allowing it? I don't really believe that it would lead to more scams like Teedee suggests but it is just a feel.
I don't see any harm in allowing it. I just see it as a waste of a makers time given that the consumer base is the same, despite life being blown into the sales/marketing side.

Sure, over a bit of time that could indeed change. But how much time does a self employed person have to realise it, before they realise is time to get a job?

I hear you but if you post a knife for sale on Insta, how much more work would it be to post it here too?

Not sure. When it comes to forums I still use photo hosting sites and need to upload, then copy/paste the BB code for every pic... I seem to recall you dont need to do that here if you paid the subscription though. (wasnt like that before)

Let me rephrase that. We don't collect knives but we do tend to accumulate them. (rather like canteens, but that is another story)

This. Totally this.

Focusing on the wider elements of "bushcraft" not just knives. A knife is one tool amongst many.... and not always the most useful for a job. My Fiskars bushhook, my old vintage kindling splitter, my craft-orientated knives see just as much use if not more. And if I use a knife for other outdoorsie-things, I tend to reach for one of my puukkos....

The bit that is really great on here is as @Toddy says, I think of it like virtual "campfire chats" and campfire chats have always been one of the best parts of "bushcraft."

I’m sure that you know you don’t have to answer that question.
Quite right I don't have to answer that question but seeing as I have indicated a problem, folk might be interested in helping me resolve, I think it best I do answer as otherwise the problem without answer will persist.

Now maybe I am overthinking it as I am prone to do but my problem is I wish to buy BCUK membership but there is no way I am doing it under the forum name I use here, the reasons why I will not air on open forum.

Can someone define bushcraft for me?
I’d be particularly interested in a UK setting.

I am enjoying this site and discussion with folk who have a very wide range of subjects and crafts.

I think that there are an interesting set of people with a wide range of experience here. If it isn’t bushcraft I don’t particularly care.

But:

If it isn’t, I’d be interested in an authoritative definition that wasn’t entirely based on tools.
Surely in order to define an authoritative definition one has to first establish an authority to be in a position to define?

  • Good job

I'm a little unsure on what the prolem is.

Is it you don't want your real name being linked to silverclaws2 or is it that you don't want your silverclaws2 account to have membership? or something else?
