For a maker, BCUK isn't a great marketplace, it's not supposed to be a great marketplace. A forum is about discussion, points of view, exchanges of ideas and information. I know from having a Stuart Mitchell knife in the classifieds and seeing other handmade knives reduced and reduced until there's nothing in it for the maker or seller that people here do not want to spend money, people here want good quality real cheap stuff. That's ok with me, but were I looking to make a living, I wouldn't bother posting my knives here if nobody is likely to buy them or offer a commission, and that's what's happened.

When I had cause to look into it years ago as a one time ceremonial knife maker I came to understand ' the market ' for what I made was in the US. Alas I couldn't get my act together to act on the US encouragement I had received to get making.

It's a sort of a singular interest that not everybody understands, albeit worthy and no doubt the workmanship is amazing. Provided it cuts and does what I need it to, that pretty much satisfies me. I'm not an engineer and don't really understand about knife steel grades and grind angles, except that they exist and seem complicated.
The other over-arching shadow is the fear and loathing of the repressive knife laws. Whilst I might sometimes look at larger/fancier blades, I think what's the point ?, When am I going to use it and where can I even take it. Even having a knife collection can be a problem if some wokery person hears about it and starts clucking at all and sundry.

I keep looking at knives ive even recently commissioned a new bushcraft blade but as above im going to change my mind and have a friction folder made which can be carried and used daily i still miss on here being able to look at all the maker delights

I’m not in the knife market and not particularly a knife enthusiasts but I can understand why folk might be.

Any thread about knives tends to evoke lots of pictures.

Might there be merit in an edge tool gallery? Good to drool over or ask questions and add notes without commerce or the need to raise an issue.

Just a brain fart.

Bcuk used to be full of makers all seem to have gone crying shame really
I hope that no one is distressed by my contribution here. Few will be surprised.

I first came to BcUK just a couple of years ago and my first impression was that it was more of an edge tool forum with the other crafts as side issues.

I think that the site offers a much more balanced view of Bushcraft now than it did then.

I hope against hope that this bulletin board format can survive. I have no time for the so called social media and would lose contact with the Bushcraft world without it.
