Definitely looks like a nuthatch. We get one on a couple of trees in the garden from time to time. I've never heard it's call, though.

Quite a monotonous 'chirp' most of the time. Then, sometimes, a fast warble of almost the same chirp (if that makes sense). They are frequent sightings around here and in the woods. I think we must also have half the county's Green Woodpecker population - people near us say they never see them but we have them most days :)

Thought I heard/saw a green woodpecker in the woods earlier, but turns out it’s what I believe to be a nuthatch. Head first facing down the tree and the markings look spot on for that identification. Blurry photos as it was quite some way up in the canopy.

Not rare, but I’ve never knowingly seen one before so that’s nice.
I saw a Nuthatch in our garden earlier in the year.

It appears that we are getting a a broader range of birds nowadays than we were a few years ago.

I saw a jay in a park yesterday. It was quite close to me as I walked.

I saw another one in a suburban woodland, next to a motorway, last week.

I remember reading about the jay on a poster (free with tokens from 1980s breakfast cereal?) and being intrigued by the colouring, when I was a child, but never seeing one, despite me often being in woods near my parents' home and beyond.

In recent years, I have seen a few jays.

We have the woodpeckers (greater spotted) and nuthatches on our bird feeder in the front garden too...and we are now suburbia. There are a lot of woodlands still around us though, and a tree lined nature walk runs along side the burn at the side of our garden.

Today, Himself caught a wasp. It stung him on the back through his polo shirt. He thought it was a thorn and pulled it away and found himself with a wasp between his fingers.

It's just that time of year :sigh:

Chinese Water Deer. Buck by the looks of things

Isn't it a roe doe? I must admit never seeing a CWD though.
Pretty confident it's a roe deer... not sure we have the CWD around here.
And it had the white rear end that pretty remarkable afaik although its not showing on the picture.
Pic was taken with my phone and zoomed in quite a bit making the color look a bit flat and od.

A New friend, and one I was surprised to be introduced to; he's very particular and not often on display. I was also surprised to see him out of his case.

He didnt eat his fish; I suspect he prefers fresh.

(I say `he` but unknown gender)

They are not so discrete these days are they?

To Contextualise my bird I am doing a paper for the Theoretical Archaeology Conference this winter, on the Great Auk. So I needed to go find one. Hes in Cardiff Museum; a much storied example.
