You're a brave man! :)
We're developing a food based understanding :)

To be honest they've seemed ok since the start, I don't get any aggressive vibe off them as long as Mimi stays behind me, which she does. Pretty much anything is worth a peck, even palm flat feeding and they want my hand, sleeves, knee etc. :D

i was navigating an obstacle on the path up through a gully blocked by branches and uña de cato (literally "cat's claw, an aptly named vine) when i saw something bright yellow ca.6ft away: it turned out to be an oropel (=eyelash pitviper, a tree-dwelling reptile whose colour can vary)

less scary than an encounter in february: i was stuck in an obstacle on the path along a steep ridge when i heard something approaching: it turned out to be a masked and armed (.22rifle) poacher and his dog, passing me less than 3m away and not noticing me until he was 15m past... .him and his buddies took a break later this day conveniently in front of a camera i'd set up earlier, which allowed ID and the land owner to take measurements...

I went out for a fairly long walk yesterday, across a field that's left more or less wild. When the river is very high this field can flood to protect the towns downstream, and by allowing the water to flow unimpeded Paris avoids flooding.

I went along the Seine walking downstream past the ferry at La Frette to the next one at Herblay. I'd seen a solitary swan and a couple on the other side of the river and wanted some photos from a bit closer. A heron flew over just before I boarded the ferry, but too close and a bit too fast for me to get a good picture.

On the other side of the river I had a bit of difficulty getting well positioned; I had decided to take only a 300mm lens.

There were some cormorants patched or swimming; a black headed gull and three mallards were flying around. I talked for a while with a bloke from the water skiing club... Apparently there are hardly any small fish in the shallows, none where we were, and no nesting swans or ducks. He tells me that there are a lot of kingfishers; I saw one when I was fishing nearby three years ago.

I saw more insects than birds...

There's a lot of traffic on this stretch: big barges, sometimes two unpowered barges with a pusher and later in the season there will be Swiss flagged cruise boats. Then the are small pleasure craft: water skiers, fishermen, day cruisers... And the river police.

What trout? :p

I like the punky red hair coot chicks sport. They almost look like Moorhens as they get a bit bigger and then go monochrome.

Some Canada geese had nested beside the boat slipway. Only one egg hatched (l found a couple of eggs in the water) now the family has moved off so hopefully the chick will make it.

Three or four Leverets hopping around, playing it seemed to me. I was stationary about 30 - 40m away watching quietly (with and without bins) and they didn't seemed overly concerned about me. After a couple of minutes they headed across and disappeared into some Gorse. Nice moment, especially so as Hares usually leg it off into the distance at warp speed as soon as they're aware of me.

I've seen Hares along there before so I shall keep a good eye out when I'm heading past.

My ex's garden is turning into a bit of a Reserve; I saw two Great Spotted Woodpeckers who couldn't get enough of the fatballs, a squirrel ditto, when the woodies and crows didn't chase it off. She also sent me a clip of a tit getting food from the feeder and then feeding it to her fledgling chick sat on a barrel.
I've seen a green woodie in the area in past years, but this is the first time I've seen the Great Spotted one. Her feeder is about 12ft from the kitchen window.
I don't know why the crows sit around the garden, they don't appear to be feeding on anything.
And I'm very pleased to find a bee swarm in one of my hives.

We've been hearing them for a couple of weeks now and today I noticed a couple of bundles of fluff on the edge of our woodland. You can just make out what they are hopefully, it was a camera pic taken at distance. They are half way up the pic and one at each side.

They're a pair of young tawny owls and they've been screeching most evening. This is what they sound like, it puzzled me a bit when I first heard the call a few years back.

What a great site! I remember someone hearing a call and being able to indentify it as a little owl and was a little envious. I thought it would take years, knowledge and lots of practice (and probably did). Now I have a cheat way to learn a few calls.- site bookmarked!
