What is this?

I found one of these on a bimble yesterday.


Thought it looked like a shotgun shell from a distance but its not, its around the same size as an AA battery. Popped in to see a mate on the way home and he had found one in his garden that looked exactly the same but a bit bigger. I wondered if they may be bits of fireworks. Anyone know what they are?

Pretty sure its not a shotgun shell, its very thick plastic and the copper coloured end is under the plastic too.

Is there any threaded part on the end Paul?

I can't really tell from the picture but it could be dummy shell. They are so you can pull the trigger without damaging the firing pins after you have cleaned the gun. I have some for a 12 bore that look similar so it could be the same for a smaller bore

Is it one of things for scaring birds away from crops?

Its not a snap cap.

I did thing about a crow scarer but its like none I have ever seen.

Could it be an odd wad?

There is a small hole in the copper coloured end, not sure if its threaded though will check later and get some more pics. The one found in my friends garden is slightly bigger and he lives in the middle of town, so not sure how a bird scarer would get into his garden. Its 2-3 mm thick plastic so its quite sturdy.

Interesting - for all the world that looks like a flare projectile (shot by hand from a pen sized launcher) - hence the indent in the base. Could be from a firework but they are generally cardboard.

Well, its certainly neither a cartridge or a wad. I would suspect some form of flare or firework material - the solid base with a "touch hole" for some form of initiator would imply that...but I am guessing

I did wonder if it was something to do with fireworks, seemed a bit too sturdy though. Thanks for the opinions chaps.

Looking at those pics I think Robbi is on the money, don't the whistling fireworks have a plastic tube inside?

Could be a firing tube from one of those "Cake" fireworks where there may be 50 or 100 tubes in one firework, the plastic being thicker than the cardboard usually used as it would prevent accidental pre-ignition of others around it.

Yep thats what it is. I once(while carrying out a search)found an I.E.D, that was based on these. It consisted of 3 large ones,then had nuts, bolts & wood screws etc packed around it.
