In a spirit of optimism I've just checked over my day sack which fits inside my main rucksack. Unsurprisingly, it has much the same contents as most of you carry, although mine probably has more age-relevant medication in the FAK!
One extra i do carry in my possibles pouch are a few cryptic crosswords. I've carried crossword puzzles since the time I was pinned down by a blizzard for three days years ago. Although properly equipped to maintain body temperature, I nearly died of boredom. A few difficult puzzles can keep boredom at bay while sitting out a shower and the paper can also be used for other purposes! My favourites are the Guardian cryptic, quiptic and Everyman.

Just noticed a common omission from many lists. Although several mention wet wipes, alcohol hand gel and wet wipes do I detect a coyness about what not only bears do in the woods?
In the most easily accessible pocket of my daysack is a Ziploc bag containing loo paper and alcohol hand cleanser. This bag is also often useful in urban settings as well.
