What did you buy today?

  • BushMoot: Come along to the amazing Summer Moot 31st July - 5th August (extended Moot : 27th July - 8th August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
I went in to look for an astronomy book to go with our new telescope (bought it for my son for his 6th birthday which was just before Christmas), wasn't expecting to find much but got lucky, and they all look brand new. The one book is like £12 online
I guess you are familiar with the various star gazer type apps? ( I appreciate a 6 year old won't have a phone )

Makes finding the things and understanding their proximity and correlation somewhat easier. Books also back this up well.

Successfully not buying anything today, after laying in enough food to feed my mum, SWMBO, our two grown-up kids, son's GF, plus a visit from BIL, his wife and two off their offspring for a visit, plus another friend of 30+ years ago who's coming over tonight (but she's bringing a duck liver poached in wine, so I only need to prepare veg and SWMBO will take care of dessert).

And I have spent more than intended on photography over the last couple of months. Most of it second hand or clearance, but yesterday I decided to go for a modern remake of an old lens; the TTArtisan 75 mm f/1,5 "inspired by" the Carl Zeiss Biotar 75mm f/1.5. Meyer-Optik Görlitz revived the Biotar 75mm f/1.5 in 2023, but €1400 is far more than I'm prepared to pay. The TTArtisan version is a shade over €300, and because it's an M42 mount I can use adapter rings to fit it to my current Canon bodies and just about anything I might use in the future.

Yep, I have also been photo-kit shopping. My old wildlife field kit was just too heavy to lug around anymore so I made the decision to go mirrorless and replace the lenses for the newer much lighter gear. My field kit now weighs half of the old :)

I had a Feuerhand 323 hot blast lantern arrive on Xmyth Eve. I finally got around to unboxing it today and I'm well pleased with it as it's in fantastic condition No rust apart from a couple tiny spots on the globe wire and the paint looks factory original with a lovely embossed globe as well.

Yes, unfortunately my phone screen has cracked and barely works enough to perform basic functions but I have used phone apps in the past. Currently using Stellarium on laptop.

Ordered a Cold Steel Bushman. Want to have the ability to make a hiking staff into a spear without having the head permanently assembled.

A Bluray player (Panasonic 820). Streaming service picture quality is quite poor and I do not trust them at all when it comes to purchasing films (in fact, you are only purchasing a digital license which they can revoke whenever they want), especially as more services are adding adverts to paid subscription tiers.

Blade Runner in 4K UHD and the LOTR extended cuts in Dolby Vision should be quite the experience this week.

Two things arrived today. A BRS-201 stove that’s going to have to be run via an adaptor on the upright cheapo canisters. It eats gas, and roars so hard the dog ran away to her bed.

Camping wok cooking is going to be fun

And a tiny little knife, Real Steel Baby Barlow. Very nice fit and finish, sharp, half stop and a decent spring. Fancied a few of the Real Steels, there’s a bushcraft one called Pathfinder that comes in folding scandi or flat grind flavour. Lots to like on their site.

Got a new front door key cut for Dad; his is wearing; and its `jiggle jiggle jiggle`.

"How long will it take?"

"Wait a sec; there you are".

So, pretty fast service.

Advised - ( maybe wrong , its from Reddit ) If you start Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers EE at 9:13:19 on New Years Eve, the new year will begin with Theoden saying: "So it begins"
