about 11 miles before Jokkmokk, I saw a sign about knives. Drove down a snowy lane and found a little shop where I bought this knife. The two greyish rings are apparently old whale rib, the cream is elk, and the amazing other bit of the handle came from Finland. No idea what it is! Name of the guy is Wolfgang alwart. Looked a bit like Santa Claus...

brew up using old 111 I haven't used for years, including paraffin in it that is at least 3 years old. There is simply no more reliable stove ever made.

Not sure if you can spot them in this pic, but spotted a herd of reindeer through the trees. Will have better pics on other camera when I get back. Pulled off road to get this - had to dig car out oa snowdrift!

I've got snowchains in the car, but haven't seen the need to fit them yet. 4x4 high range and mud and snow tyres seem to work OK on the snow covered roads, but once you get into deeper snowdrifts it's either dig it out or fit the chains. So far its been easier to dig out, but that will probably change today when I set up camp in the forest

One interesting problem I wasn't expecting! While tramping around the forest (in the Serri nature-reserve northeast of Jokkmokk) looking for a suitable campsite, I've had to be careful of clearings. There are lots of lakes and ponds around the area, and covered in snow they are indistinguishable from a clearing. And because it is still early in the winter they won't hold my weight. Makes it very interesting...
