Cotton boxer underpants. Make a ventilation slit just below the fly, about 2 cm long, but do not firget to stich up the sides.

It is really easy to get a skin infection in the skin gold between the upper inner thigh and scrotum, this prevents it.

I used to get those infections. Really, realky painful!

I'm also sweatier than most people and thought I'd share my best tip for hot days on the trail:
Open your fly. When walking, the pant legs work as bellows, keeping your groin area a lot cooler.
For underwear the most important thing to me is to use the tight fitting elastic kind with legs. Legs too short means chafing action between thighs and too loose means moisture wicking doesnt work properly.

Same principle but less destructive!

I went through an underwear search phase a few years ago.

High street low tech

  • M&S Microfibre briefs, purchased on the basis of recommendations here were the absolute worst. They didn't stay fresh, one day and they needed a wash, and they dried no faster than cotton knit.
  • Burton's thin cotton boxers, surprisingly good, cool, dried pretty fast since they were woven, not knit, and were thin. Only downside was that they didn't offer much support and with the wrong trousers chaffing could happen.
  • Burton's Poly Cotton Boxers, dried a bit faster, not quite so fresh smelling, but crucially the elastic waist band wasn't smooth and left horrible, painful, corrugation prints in my waist.

Specialist

  • Bamboo trunks from the BAM company. Very comfortable, fairly thick material, stay fresh well. Like all bamboo (Rayon/Viscose) they dry r....e...a...l...l.......y ______s...l...o...w...l...y. Fine in a hot, dry, climate. Used in Namibia and used the same set for two weeks with a single wash mid way, dried over night in the night wind. Most places are not as dry as Namibia in June!
  • Silk from Orvis, long-johns only, not very durable, not particularly fast to dry. Wasn't so impressed with the longjohns that I will bother trying normal underwear.
  • Merino wool, three different sources, Janus, Rammite and Aklima. The Janus are quite heavy, similar to the Bamboo in thickness, and warm. The Rammite is sold by an Australian company and advertised for use in hot climates, the Aklima are of a similar weight. Tested these on a three week trip to the US in May and June, Kentucky and Georgia, so humid too, and they worked really well. Faster to dry than regular cotton, good niff control, comfortable.
  • Rohan synthetics, two kinds, Ultra Silver and Cool Silver. Fantastic kit! Out to three or four days they stayed as fresh as wool (I had the chance to rinse them after that long so took it), but then they dried much faster from a quick wash. The Ultras are so thin and light that they are good as a back-up set, can just about be washed and put back on wet to dry on you.

If I go somewhere really cold I use the Merino. If it is going to be hot and dry with limited water, light Merino and/or bamboo. The synthetics cover the rest. If I could only have one set, it would be a hard choice between the Cool Silvers and the Rammite.

The Rohan underwear are not cheap, nor are the BAM trunks, nor the light Merino. In fact, all the high performance, high spec, low volume undergarments I have seen are more expensive than the daily use, high volume versions. I don't use the high performance stuff every day, just when I am travelling, so I expect it will last me a while and am happy with the investment alongside outdoor/travel specific outer garments.

Best of luck :)

You can go commando too.
Underwear is a new invention, our ancestors did not have any..

Go back far enough and they didn't have fire either. Doesn't mean i'm planning to go running around naked finding dead animals and tearing the flesh from it's carcass with my teeth ... :p

commando means no underwear, but trousers or dress...
Check with your wife or girlfriend.

Before I was tought to create the 'crotch vent" in the army, I got the (peri scrotal infection) a few times.
Also something similar between the butt cheeks. Painful and handicapping indeed.
Since the "venting" I never had it.
Had it a couple of times here, most shorts have a "inner short" of a kind of coarse nylon mesh fabric. Chafes.
I cut it away now = no problems since.

Just for the record, I do not think it is shameful or weird to discuss any problems with our bodies. Babies can get something similar, is called Diaper Rash.
When you are in the wilderness, it does not matter if you get a problem between your legs or between your toes, it makes life miserable and the trip less than enjoyable.

I find that applying baby powder helps with the hygiene. But it needs to be washed off every evening.

also the material in the underwear is important. I find cotton or silk the nicest. Synthetics start smelling if not washed daily.
Applies to socks too.

I've used Johnsons Baby Cream on trips for the occasional rash in the "southern" regions to great success.

(But if you're sharing a tube with someone else consider a process as to how both of you can extract some cream from the tube without both of you smearing your application finger across the nozzle!)

It's more of an issue with the: they didn't have it in the past, it's a new invention, you don't need it. Take it far enough, and you get my hillarious situation ;). Compared to anything in nature, everything we humans have "invented" is recent, doesn't mean i'd like to go without it ;).

Yes, but if one of the newfangled stuff is impractical or hurt us, I do not see any problems omitting it.
I am not sure why we wear underpants? Hygienic reasons, so we do not need to wash the trousers that often?

Wintertime longjohns are nice, for the warmth. But in summer?

We do know that overheating the male gonads is negative, our fertility goes down.

Hygiene is the main reason. It's easier to change a pair of underwear, than it is to change the outer trousers. Means that you can wash the trousers less (inflicting less wear upon them in the process), while allowing you to stay clean.
