Teaching a Child the use of knives

When i was about five years old, my dad gave me my first knife.I was taught not to be stupid wih it (carve away from body.....etc) and some basic cutting strokes.
There is a way of teaching a child by listening. If the child hears itself say what you must/must not with a knife then he/she will be more likely to act upon those rules set.
For example
Dad: What do you think will happen if you carve towards yourself?
Child: I will cut myself

(the super-simplified version of a technique called "motivational Interviewing")

If you know and trust your child, then there will be no problem. It is not the childs fault if he/she has an accident, it is just that he/she hasn't been taught properly.

I hope this is clear, i apologise if it is not. Just email me if you have further questions.

Regards,

well i'm doing knife work with the scouts monday night and i'm terrified! so anything that gives me the edge safety wise is welcome (pun intended) :-D  they're an unruly bunch at best, but responded well to the axe and saw work, so maybe i should have a little more faith!

it's often worth starting a new thread, even if the subject has already been discussed previously. we never stop learning. it seems that people are more likely to chime in with a few tips on what they might have learnt recently, than they are to dig up an old thread and try to kick it back to life.

forums in general would be pretty boring if we were only allowed to discuss each subject once.

cheers, and.

knives to use:

1 base with mix of folders, opening, closing, different locks and so on.

1 base whittling a pointy stick, with frosts vikings, deck knives and swaks.

1 base batonning, prolly some bigger nasty looking black knives. ie the more expensive stuff, 'cause that's all i've got left.

they won't get BRK&T highland or the lapp puukko. they're mine! well, they're all mine, but they can't have those two!

cheers,and.

If you *enforce* that they *must* obey your rules, they will be more likely to break your rules!
When you "ask" them the rules, you will be surprised to see that they will know pretty much everything you will tell them (about safety). If you treat them like adults, they will respond like adults.
Just make them say the rules by asking them questions, so they hear the rules coming out of their own mouths.

Again, apologies if it is unclear!

Cool selection!

There's nothing that beats hands on when it comes to knives.

Still, I can understand why you're terrified!

No way! I remember the last time I lent a Busse to someone - they wanted to chop at a SAK to see which was stronger!  Feeling particularly evil I let then as long as I got the first chop  and it chopped the blade of the SAK clean off without even scratching the coating on the Steel Heart!!!!

Busses tend to make people go "strange" (just take a look at the Busse forum!) :-D :-D
