Survivors - what did you think?

I thought it was OK in spite of the cast choice - seemed to follow the original storyline too - maybe that bodes well for the rest of the series?

Got to agree Scoops, i quite enjoyed it. Good character development and story base, i'll be watching next time.

Yup, I'm hooked. I never saw the first effort as I was in Germany in the Army when it was shown, so I have nothing to compare it to. I thought it was a good first episode though. Maybe not enough bodies lying in the streets. If that happened there would have been masses of bodies where people had dropped and nobody would have been available to help them. It all looked too sterile. Also the roads and motorways were too clear. There would have been thousands of people trying to get out of the cities who would have pegged out at the wheel and crashed, or just pulled over and died.

Poor cast, the ethnic mix was not representative of the amount of survivors left really, six episodes won't cover the story so I don't hold out much hope to be honest. I'm very disappointed to tell the truth, I'd been looking forward to this for months and hope it picks up a lot.

I still love the original three series and am going to watch 'mad dog' to cheer myself up

They are 1 hour episodes though Rich and a 90 minute episode to kick it off. That's 6 1/2 hours of tv. The old series was 14x45 minute episodes (10 1/2 hours) IIRC and was terribly slow in parts. That kind of pace of direction wouldn't be tolerated by todays instant-fix viewers.

I thought it was a good start. They didn't appear to pull too many punches. I'm not enamoured by the cast and would've preferred to see all unknowns, but I'll give em the benefit of the doubt.

I never look at cast lists, you end up with a pre-conceived like or dislike. I liked it, as already said, very much like the original series storyline and a polished BBC production...

Already the PC brigade have been upset, ha-ha, who else can spot the upsetting scenes?

I thought it was good, I assume the characters develop, we only saw the backstory for a few of them, and hints of the others.
I thought the open motorways/roads a scary image, designed for hundreds of cars an hour, empty and the guys playing football. The car neatly parked in the middle of the empty shopping centre car park..

Watched it this morning on iPlayer when i was up with the baby (05.15 ) I thought it was quite good, and i'll look out for the next one, I don't care about the cast, I've seen a couple of them before but we don't watch tv (apart from my now and then on iplayer) so they're not familiar. I hope that it carries on getting better and better now that the basics are set up.

There was a series years ago where most people died but there were some in stasis on a train in a tunnel, the rain was acid etc that was quite good iirc.

I too watch very little TV so did not recognise many of the cast...
I enjoyed it!
I still have a copy of the book (and its sequal "Genesis of a hero") and video of a cople of episodes of the original BBC series - my how production values have improved over the years!

I've just looked at how much it costs for the original series......I don't think i'll be picking them up any time soon

I have never seen the older version, so i have nothing to compare it to. So far it looks very good, well written and well produced. There will always be the "I don't think it would happen like that" with survival fiction, but in a way that what makes this genre so entertaining.

I liked the mushroom comment, but then anything that makes me look more useful than I actually am I am up for it. .

I hated the last train, it started off very good, and then the plot went down a dark tunnel and splatted at the end. I remember feeling really cheated by the script writers, the idea was really good but the plot went wierd unreal by the end.

I agree with the bodies and crashed cars, when you look at any of the environmental traums that have happened the insane exodus is the biggest thing.

Thinking about it though, if you lived in an uban area and 'cleared your bit'. You have tinned goods from houses, closed gardens ideal for growing maize (grows quicker and can be dried easily), green houses grow peppers and tomatoes you could dry, garages full of tools. I would think a semi urban area would be a better choice. Set drums up to catch rainwater from the roofs. I shall start eyeing up my neibours tonight!
