The only green stuff I'd be cutting down would be ferns to cover the "roof". The rest would be deadwood, and the ferns grow like weeds. Within a few weeks they'd have grown back with avengence!

Trouble is, all the clearing up afterwards. Imagine the landowners thoughts if he see's 10 or 15 debris shelters dotted about the woods. Tarps lightweight, fast and no enviromental impact.

Colin.

Wouldn't be a problem if we collected all the wood from our respective shelters after the first night and used them on the fire the second night as a group... meanwhile we switched to tarps for that second night.

Gonna be a lot of wood to carry from site to site if your camping in 2 woods. All I'm saying is that using a tarp is easier and more versatile, especially for 1 night.
I would consider making a shelter if it was for a few nights, but 2 to 3 hours or more collecting materials and then building the shelter when its p155ing down, then clearing away next day, won't suit many.:)

I'm not saying that everyone has to build a natural shelter, just that I'd like to for the additional "challenge" of doing so.

I completely and utterly agree with you that tarps are infinitely better in pretty-much every way... but there's not really a challenege in using one as compared to building a shelter.

Also, the kind of shelters I used to build way back when were just wooden frames coated in ferns (or leaf-rich boughs, depending on availability of materials). They were easy enough to carry with me (because I did that when going from woodlands to fields). I'm not thinking of building a giant log cabin ;)

Watching this with interest, I very aware that if we did the Challange on the New campsite farm, I know that we have permision to build one shelter, that can be used over and over, I am a bit reserved to back the natural shelter part of the plan, until we are well established with Phil, last thing I want is for one of his tenents that Copice the woods around there to say look what they left, and moan about it, it would be so easy to do, then he gets the hump and things end there.

I know that some do know how to build a shelter and what to use, I know that there are only three of us at the mo that are going to do teh challange, but some others are interested and numbers will grow, myself I am sticking with a tarp its easy and quick.

My suggestion is that next meet those that would like to do a natural shelter for now build one main one back at the Main Camp, and then we use that...

I have kept quite up until now about natural shelters for this challange, I know unlike me.... I just dont want to spoil it, but I would like to work on some other things that I am hoping to ask if we can do like Air Gun use for targets, and archery for targets, and of course other things.

I am trying to please every one, and trying to get the mix right with the things/activitys we do to keep interest, and not end up a group that turns up and just sits round the fire.

I can see the feelings of both sides of the Parties, I am sure that we can come to some agreement wich will meet a compromise, But would like to Keep this challange as near to the Origanal as possible the two base navigation Idea is extra to the brief but makes it more interesting and brings in other skill like navigating...

I will go back to the original kit list on the Thread that this came from...

kit list
2 wool blankets or one bedroll.
waterproof tarp.
knife
axe or saw. only one of them.
flint and steel.
tinder box
water bottle
billy can.
cup.
spoon
food
lighting preferably candle but torch is ok.
basic water filter. ie mill bank bag or the likes
rucksack to carry items in. more kudos to those who do not use a pack

if for whatever reason you cannot have an open fire either a stove or fire box is fine.
if water is not safe or readily available at usual site then an extra five litres is permitted

safety items
phone.
first aid kit
camera to take photos

If the woodland we end up doing this in is not permissive of building shelters from natural materials, then fair enough... I'll use the tarp. Ultimately I think it really depends on where we end up doing this :)

For my part i was going to use non distructive methodology for the shelter set up but i'm really not bothered about this as i know i can build one so am more than happy to just settle down in my bivi bag and blankets for the night. i agree that several people building natrals could possibly give the owner cause for concern.

Nice axe work by the way Stuart and i also would be happy to learn more about navigation. As i have said starting next year i will be doing a two year bushcraft course so the more i am familiar with now the less i have to worry about then.

At the end of the day the Daniel Boone thing is only a fun challenge for us and as i have spent nights in far worse locations i won't loose any sleep whatever way it's played.

hi, At the end of the day the Daniel Boone challenge should be fun for all of us, my bedroll may look like a sleeping bag, my candle may look like a head torch, and my flint and steel mite have zippo on it. my water will come from home or tesco's and my phone will be switched off, my backpack will be full, my smile will be ear to ear. im sure mr boone would have used all the mod cons of his time if he had them at hand, as will i. only thing is ? will my camp fire look like a jetboil or a wood stove mk2t ?. i hope i have not upset anyone regarding my list of up to date kit, but im going to have a nice time on my daniel boone challenge  and no tree's or ferns will be harmed on my watch :lmao: later boys

I suppose it doesn't matter if Stu's backpack has "Discovery" on it, either :)

I also suppose it won't matter too much if my "crook knife" has "Black & Decker" on it :p

It also looks like a Natural Shelter Build would be a good idea as well in the Base Camp area somewere in the corner..lets make the most of what we have there

The next core dates for the monthly meets-depending on how things go I will try to get some more nights, I will hope to do a Four Nighter at some stage.
