Stitching awl any good?

I'm looking at getting a stitching awl or speedy stitcher for my housewife. Has any one got/used these or can recommend an alternative (other than needle and thimble)

I had one of these many years ago. They do a job and can be useful for quick repairs but the stitch they produce is very prone to unravelling if any part of the stitching gets worn.

A normal awl and a packet of needles will do a better job and it is not a difficult skill to learn.
