I think there is a bit more to it than sticking on an arrow rest.

Lifting the front of the arrow can result in "porpoising" of the shot, the arrow climbing & dipping like a porpoise through the surf. The "nocking point" on the string is quite critical to a good shot - lifting the arrow throws all that careful setting up to the four winds.

And whatever happened to "Archers Paradox" where a correctly "spined" arrow flexes around the riser - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archer's_paradox

It had obviously worked for Dave Canterbury, but I don't think it is a complete answer.
