mackeral are best caught with a mackrel trace which is 4 hooks along the line with shiny bits of paper stuck to the hooks

My personal favourite for mackerel is a trace of feathers (they were invented before shiny paper  )

I had a super set of feathers once, they caught every time and they looked thicker in the water than any other feathers that I've used since. I used to go fishing with my dad in his boat in Scotland and I would catch all the fish on my feathers an he wouldn't even get a knock :lmao: even though we were fishing at the same depth and no more than 2m apart

Unfortunately my lucky feathers decided to wrap them self around a rock....never to be seen again :( and last time I went mackerel fishing he caught more than I did

i found there great for the price. you arent going to be able pull a monster in on it. but there light and small for 11' and great fun for beach fishing for flat fish or what ever you want to target.
i always take it with me,even when i go night fishing with my tuffer tackle. just in case theres a flat-moderate swell + i always catch my best plaice and flounder in verry shallow water on light tackle 8-15lb line. so if all elss fails il normally at least get a little tiddler :lmao:
although they might be to long for river fishing i think you could use them on bigger waters as the tip is quite soft.
dont know what other people think but in my mind a good all round sea telescopic.
Good luck
Let me know how you get on.

Its only 11' or 13'. sorry i thought it was a 10'. i would think from the beach you could manage a fish of 5lb with ease(dont think it would snap if you caught anything a bit bigger than that). however it dose have a soft tip so if you were pier fishing a fish of 5lb would be a strugle up the wall
I would use 15lb line with a 40-50lb shockleader.
just so you know if your fishing and putting a lot of force on the rod and line which you will beachcasting always use a shock leader as the lighter line can snap and do someone some real damage.
but for light fishing 15lb main line is fine.
if you want a rod with a big weight and thrash about a bit you would need something stronger. but if your on about light fishing this would be fine. used mine for about 6 month and its been fine. hope that made sence.
you can always call the shop. there verry nice people they will quite happly help you out.

That sounds like a good price for a sea rod :)

The only worry is i have had 2 telescopic sea rods in the past and both have failed in heavy sea weed :( Its just due the the telescopic design it just doesnt hold the weight when covered in weed or snagged.
I have paid around the same maybe a little more for a 10ft beach caster local see side tackle shops.
May have just been my bad luck

i agree. thats why i use mine from the beach. which is normaly clear ground near me.
i think you can get a lot better ones but as with everything the cost goes up.
Not realy worth paying more than that for what i use it for.

Heretics! Mackerel feather rigs indeed... use a fly rod! ;) I've had lots of mackies on the fly this year down on the Dorset Coast. I use a single silver Crazy Charlie and they love it! They scrap like mad Bstds on a fly rig.. The bass this year are not up to much size wise, but had a few on the fly. You won't keep yourself fed though sea flyfishing, but it sure is fun. I also have that little Shimano rod I use for spinning and even macks on a tiny spinner on that are awesome!

Moonraker- how you getting on??

Summertime is best. Usually they arrive about August, and September is best. I use a fly rod on the beach to catch them in Dorset, but the normal is feathering off Chesil bank, Dorset, where they rake them in. Back in August, I witnessed am amazing spectacle- while reeling in a mackerel on a fly, two MASSIVE bass tried to catch it! They both swam around it trying to get in before the other. Eventually one got it, and stayed on the line for a few minutes before realising something wasn't right, and spat the fish out... And then it happened again a few minutes later. I've never seen anything like it, and that was off the rokcs on the shore. They won't be in the estuary though, you'll have to go out in the sea. I'm not sure if they travel that far north, but they might, it's worth a go.

Ah, cornwall.. that's where they go to in the winter, a spot in the Atlantic a few miles off cornwall. They probably do visit up your way in the summer. I caught some on the west tip of Wales last August. Give it a go next year!
