Could anyone point me in the direction of a guide for

what is seasonal/available for catching for beach casting,

What rig to use for each species!

I know this is a tall order, but you guys have yet to let me down!

Tall order, Pignut, as , location mainly dictates species and season.
You could do worse, than having a trawl through www.fishing-forum.

Were you in mind to just do your local beaches, or what?
The tackle you have , would dictate the tactics , what do you use?

Ceeg

ps. having said that , I will be checking over my gear to start the annual bash, on the Humber marks.......seems that theres fish at a lot of the mudplugging marks, until the beaches start up in December.....if you try the S Bank, after dark HW is
generally best; but dont wait for the Spring tides, you'll not hold til 30 mins before.

This web site which Spacemonkey recently passed on to me is really useful for all things sea angling and presented as an online book;

Operation Sea Angler

Check out this forum which has loads of UK regional info and often has regular reports from sea fishing marks (venues);

World Sea Fishing online sea angling forum

Who knows
just a piece of advice
bass like fast tides so when the tides are turning is the best time to fish for bass
i use ragworm alot and to get this you go to the beach at low tide and where you see little holes dig and soon enough you will have a bucket full, to put them on the hook i 'head them' to do this tapp one of the ends and if claws come out this is the head push the hook barb into here and thread the worm onto the hook when half of the worm is on take the hook barb out of the side

Nice one Leon.
Got any other top tips? I'm interested in some easy ways to fish off the coast for food, preferebly those that work with simple tackle, metal lures etc.

Who knows
well i havent fished for that long and havent ever used lures but you can also use mackrel for bait and it works quite well
do you have a rod ? i have a 12ft rod which only cost me £30 and it came with hooks weights and some swivels, i find 12ft a bit big for me but it may be ok for you as you are an adult
watch out for the spike on the back of bass as it can pierce right through your hand, it is attatched to there top fin and when they put there fins up the spike is a defense mechanism do you know how to prepare a fish for eating if not i will tell you but i dont have any pictures

Nahh, I don't have a rod. Ideally I would like a small travel rod that I can carry in my pack with some line, hooks, lures etc.

It would need to be a reasonably reliable system that would allow me to catch fish from the shore or from inland waters to supplement my diet whilst out and about.

Is there suchh a holy grail??

I like my night fishing of the noth east coast, But at places like sandsend next to whitby theres a good mix of beach and rockpools so i find getting my grub of the rocks on the low tide (can also collect your bait) then fish on edge of rocks on to the sand with a 10' telescopic with 8-10lb line and a light weight with grips using a 3 hook rig for flatties and whiting.
find it works great. but is a bit restricting if theres a bit of a swell but good for a of the cuff visit. takes no room up in the boot of the car so i just leave it there ready. cant wait to get out there this winter! i use clevelandseaangler.co.uk. dont think it would be much good for people down south but theres plenty of links that might help. also try the mag seaangler it will give you all the species for the time of year places etc quite reliable.

Haha thanks Torjus. Maybe if I ever make it to your part of Norway you can show me some netting techhniques sometime. In fact, just last night I was pulling apart a piece of paracord and considering the possibilities of making a net using the green outer as the main line and the white inner strands to make up the net......

Somehow I don't think I'd get away with it over here.

I haven't done much sea fishing but I remember a few years ago trying to catch mackerel or maybe herring from the beach using a piece of white plastic tube threaded onto the hook as bait. I couldn't catch a cold but a guy fishing next to me on the beach was pulling a couple of fish in every cast! He had a bigger rod and was casting a little further than me into a current that you could just make out due to the slight change in colour of the water. I was amazed that it worked, the plastic tube, same type of stuff as cable insulation like the earth type you use in plug sockets, has the hook threaded through it so it covers the shank of the hook.

Wouldnt do any harm to go ask at your local tackle shop. I have yet to find one that isnt staffed by happy smiley people who are happy to tell you what you need for the local area and maybe a couple of "marks" / fishing spots to try.

Just dont expect them to point you to the very best of places ;)

I’m a keen course/carp/trout fisherman and have tried sea fishing several times whilst camping etc. Im useless at it :eek: yeah i can catch Rass etc for fun but edible fish are usually a rarity lol

If you do want a little sport then just use a pre rigged 3 hook setup with a break/release weight and for free bait a few limpets, crabs and other shell fish. Other common baits are lug work (nasty little gits when they get hold of your finger) and other small fish but ask in the local tackle shops ;). The general rule is to fish an hour and a half up to high tide and an hour and a half after high tide.

The best thing to do is to check out a few places that you have seen guys fishing in and then collar them for info ;) oh and if your very lucky you can usually relieve them of some of their catch lol :D
