I've just heard a mate in the US has ordered one of the new production Schrade honesteels ($24.95)for me to forward when it arrives.

I'll post pics of it when it arrives. I've no idea if its as good as the old ones but thought it was worth trying.

As suspected the box says "Made in China" but neither the sheath or the steel is sio marked.

The sheath has a few cosmetic blemishes but is decently made from leather as opposed to leatherette.

I've heard you can get them for $17 now on another forum

Overall at first glance I'm pretty damn pleased with it. The proof of the pudding will be how well it lasts.

Just had a go on the youngests scandi scout knife and it works a treat!

I'm glad I didn't fork out for a minter on ebay now, unless it wares out quickly, which I just can't see happening, its a great bit of field kit. If I want to ponce about making my arm bald I've got the Tormek-7 but the rest of the time this suits me down to the ground!

Thanks to who ever it was who first told me about them.

Hi,
I'm more than a little intrigued by these honesteels, does anyone know why they're better than 'regular' butcher steels? I did a bit of a 'google' and saw that Bernie Garland also rates them highly, I'll be interested in seeing how they do as I'll prob'ly get fed up lugging someone's car window around the woods.

Dave.

Hi Dave! I think that they are identical to regular plain steel no diamonds butchers steels. They are just designed for field use and smaller knives as far as I can see. You can get small versions of the "rod" type steels for about a tenner, being impecunious I think I might just get one of them. I use an old almost smooth butchers steel at home for my scandis and my Old Hicks, certainly does the business when you get the knack, so I reckon these flat ones would be more than handy.

i just got one of these as well. great no nonsense solution, and fairly cheap!!

great for putting a micro-bevel on, makes them spooky sharp!! :D

so i should just be able to make one, out of D2 or something. Just temper it really hard?

I don't think they are impregnated with carbides. It's an old fashioned tool. They usually have "cast steel" embossed on them. I was also wondering if a rod of hard tempered 01 might make a decent smooth steel like the ones slaughtermen use, never though about a flat one.
