Cheers! It's a bit on the small sized, the branch wasn't that big. Still, good practice and bigger ones will be easier to do, once I get the wood, which shouldn't be long now. May hang it up by th sink and use it for drinking.

There was a five or six inch off cut from th branch I made the ladle from so I slapped it on the lathe and had a go at doing my first turned cup.

i drilled down the core until the was just a thin rim attaching it to the cup. And it snapped off easy, the stub sanded down quick enough

Ill bury it in the damp chippings and sand it down more if it don't crack.

now to clear up!

Some cracking updates there, I'm incredibly impressed. Used to have a lathe when I lived in the borders,one of the best ways to chill after work, in the shed, woodburner going and a little whisky in my coffee turning away, very therapeutic. Your wooden goblet came out really well.

I read somewhere about a guy called Nikola Tesla, you might have heard of him. Apparently he patented technology that was later used in Logie Baird';s work. This Tesla guy apparently was a real genius inventor, a mad professor who wasn;t interested in commercialising his ideas. As a result a lot of his patents were bought out by the more famous people of that era for a pittance. Tesla was always desperate for money to pay for his latest project. One of his inventions was a means to transmit electrical energy from a transmitter (think aerial) to a receiver that could be miles away. He was successful with that but it never took off, not efficient and he only managed it due to some deal with the local generating company.

Don't worry - I was making a joke (I thought the McOnie/Marconi thing would have given it away!)

Tesla was indeed a genius and Edison - who didn't have the head for maths required for really advanced electrical engineering - employed him for many years, hence the comment about Tesla inventing his best ideas. Tesla pioneered work in making AC current practical, which Edison hated because his previously mentioned mathematical limitations forced him to work mainly in DC (and he made up a load of excuses about it too!). As for the transmitting of power wirelessly, he developed Wardencliffe Tower (funded by J.P. Morgan - the person, not the bank) in an attempt to develop wireless communication, and was beaten to it by Marconi. His claims to transmitting electricity in this way began after he lost the 'radio race' and never progressed.
