Saami Handwork - Part Four

Wayland

The final instalment for now.

See parts One, Two and Three here.

These are some of the Shamanic drums {Kobday or Gievrie or Rumbu} that are not particularly bushcrafty but still show great craftsmanship.

When the Saami were Christianised (Rather forcefully), many of these drums were destroyed and a few were stolen for collections.

I shall refrain from saying what I think about such practices.

That's some beautiful work there Gary, they must habe been some fine craftsman out there back in the day. The one piece looks like a Whales' tail to me.

It's quite something hearing one of these drums thundering through the dark frozen forest at midnight under Arctic skies when you're not expecting it....

...and quite another when 'out of nowhere' a tall bearded figure clad head to foot in black leather comes lurching purposefully through the snow into the firelight.

He sure wasn't one of the local bikers.

...a while later I was half expecting the 'shop keeper' to appear.

Thanks for reminding me.
