Pip and Andy are proud to announce the birth of their first bantam chick, which hatched about 45minutes ago... :shock:

congratulations.. we hatched a bantam once.. it lived for 14 years :yikes:

We're very pleased... We had no idea really if our cock was up to the job, or if the hens would be ready or not, but this was our first batch of 6 eggs, 4 of which we think may hatch. No sign of 'pipping' from the other 3 yet, but there's plenty of time for them...

We've got another 14 that could hatch next week, and then 13 for the week after - not really sure yet where they're all going to go! They need to stay in their temperature controlled brooders for 6-8 weeks, depending on the outside temperatures, so we may find ourselves overrun with little chicks before too long! :shock:

We got some pullets from a freind just before Christmas... We've had a small flock of chickens and ducks for nearly two years though. We've also raised pigs from weaners to baconers - we don't have any piggies right now, but will be getting weaners again in May, 'finishing' them in October / November...

We had hoped to be in a position to be raising our own piglets by this time, but sadly that hasn't happened yet. We'll get there, though...

bantams lay the nicest eggs imo.. crushed sea shells etc will help them to have nice strong shels!

We give our birds oyster shells to help their calcium levels. Because we've been incubating all our bantam eggs so far, we haven't tried eating any of them, but I understand they are very nice...

We now have 3 chicks; still no sign of movement from no 4, but still plenty of time yet!
