people is there such a thing as the perfect piece of kit due to the fact my mum and dad think i have to much kit all ready and that i dont need anymore.

the problem is tho that i was lead to believe by greg (fire breather) after a chat at middlewood that one you can never have to much kit and theres always a reason you need the next piece.

so is there such a thing as the perfect piece of kit

If your always on the look out for new kit you have the wrong focus. Kit, tools etc. are just tools to help you develop skills, not a goal by themselves. There are no perfect pieces of kit.

if you have enough kit to get you out and sustain yourself well enough then you have enough:)

on the other hand, if you like kit, buy it! i'm a bit of a kit freak in that i enjoy the tools and the toys as much as the being outside and doing things, your balance my just be more towards the kit

How about one of these Drew ?

For the kit junkies, the perfect item of kit is always the next one that you want to buy - the trouble is that the act of buying it automatically steps the whole process forward to the next item.

A perpetual cycle.

My piece of advice, for what it's worth, would be to always buy the best you can afford. Not always the most expensive but the best.

Over the years, I have always spent more money on comfort than function in anything I do. Whether that was kit for caving (when I was younger and much thinner), or for walking or camping.

Ask any fisherman or golfer and they will always tell you the next piece of kit they are going to buy that will catch them the biggest fish ever or will knock five strokes off their handicap.

As Ogri says, the next bit of kit is always the best/most important but isn't that part of the fun of both a hobby and being a bloke? :) :) :)

Unfortunately the perfect kit is the Mora knife.

It's very robust, perfectly functional, easy to maintain, dirt chap and really easy to find when shopping.

But...

We don't want perfection, we want things personal, to suit us and our own imperfections and preferences. Because we rely on advice and experience of others (and rightly so) we all tend to work our way through other peoples kit choices and various phases of kit until one suits us 100%.

It doesn't keep me up at night.

I think perfection in kit, is when you can reduce it to the ultimate simplicity and not miss what you havent got. For years i thought i had pretty much achieved that, to the point that i didnt even think about it. But then, quite recently, i got the internet :lmao: discovered this place, and ebay and the like, and it really is an affliction . . . you look at what others have got, and want it, regardless of whether you actually need it. and its hard to resist sometimes. but its all just tat, end of the day.

:D well, the opposite of what i said, would be to carry everything but the kitchen sink, have 5 of everything (each being a slight improvement over the last) and be a slave to 'bushcraft' fashion. . . . does that meet with your approval? lol :naughty:

Perfection really means Perfect for you....in this time and this place and unless you're packing everything that anyone has ever recommended to you* (and you know how to get the absolute best from it) you'll never get it 100% perfect all the time.

However, nearly perfect is something everyone strives for...... and some get close

I'm currently at the "Amassing kit, waiting to field test " stage

*plus an entire village of porters to carry it all

You're so silly... To be the truth a statement doesn't have to be the opposite, that kind of polarized thinking I'll leave to the crazy people.

Saying "but its all just tat" is wrong though... and you know it dispite all the smileys and lols... don'cha ;)

come on... you can do better than trying to insight some sort of fight i'm sure...

Seems that any time there is a difference of opinion, people seem to want a fight or to take sides.

If we all thought the same there would be no need for a forum... if you want a fight pick someone other than me to have it with.

In all honesty, tho perhaps i see things different to others, it is all tat. . . pocessions. I got favourite things, things ive had for years, but if i lose em, or they get nicked, then its all replaceable with something similar. My personal interest in bushcraft is knowledge, not how much gear i can accumilate, or how unique and high quality that gear is, but to yourself, maybe thats exactly what floats ya boat. aint no right or wrong here, just each to their own
