Oh Deer! Who's been a naughty boy?

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
It sounds like a pretty sick joke with the perpitrators knowing that eventually the head would be dug up by someone. I hope they catch the twisted -insert word of your choice here- and they go down for it.

Poaching deer is wrong in a lot ways. I found a decaying animal skin in a hedgerow of derelict land a few months ago. There was no other remains near it, and it appeared to have being skinned in a very untidy manner. I know from reading this i should of reported it, but at the time I didn't know who to. Going by poachers never commit just one offence are the RSPCA the right people if i come across the same again? do the police have a special unit for these types of crimes?

I hope no-one at my allotments gets the wrong idea about me if they read this, but I buried a legally shot stags head at my allotment. The antlers were covered with plastic bag. We did it to the clean the head of flesh. I have does skull as well, which we found about 20 yards from a road in cannock. Looking at what was left of the other bones seems as if it was roadkill. I know people on here understand this behaviour, but i don't know if others will think the worst now.

this kinda of behavour just baffles me makes me cynical about people
still just remember there are a lot of people around who are decent we just dont hit the headlines.

as the words in the song say
its death for no reason and death for no reason is murder

This is odd - in that it makes the paper.

Deer get shot all the time, most call it sport and I love to eat em.

Just 'cos someone fixed it rather than ate it then, it makes the headlines......

I don't understand why folk think burying the head is so wierd, does anyone here like eating deer head? If you take it home what do you do with it there? Stick it in the wheely bin? I am not condoning illegal activity (if it was) but neither am I seeing it as a major case of animal suffering, I suspect it was far more stressed during its broken leg & human contact trauma than during its swift demise.

To me it's odd that folk "spent a long time nursing this deer back to health, to give her the best chance at life"

This was a common wild animal with a broken leg, best quickly dispatched and limited resources spent elsewhere.

I'm glad I finished reading this thread - after the first few posts I thought I was all alone in my views.

You would bury the head for lots of reasons, not least is that if I had just shot a deer with an eartag, I'd naturally assume it was tagged and as I was butchering the rest of it pretty damn quick, I'd be pretty certain that the tag was in the head or neck.

and before anyone asks why I would have shot it...

Deer are worth good money at the best of times. People are hard-up and cheap, fresh meat sells.

i have no problem with killing for food or to control populations.
i feel strongly that hunting is or should not be a sport and also believe anyone who thinks it is should not hold a gun licence .
however if you are deemed resposible enough to be licenced with a rifle i think you should be responsible enough to report a tagged animal kill.
i am happy the rspca does what it does i personely think its important to protect all wildlife
from potential and actual abuse.
i havnt hunted for years now and when i did it was mostley vermin i only took clean shots and i never lost the remorse feeling for taking the life even though i understood the reason for doing it.
and i am happy i never lost that i think the time when you are de sencertised to killing and suffering its a time to start being very worried about yourself .

But now I have to ask...

How do you feel about killing a tagged animal for food?

I do understand your point of view - I just have a natural desire to be devils advocate and ask the hard questions. Your principles are admirable but not shared by those who took the deer.

We all have the rights to opinions and views; it would be good for you to meet and chat with Mischief on here about foxes and the like; they have devastated her chickens and geese this year.

ive never shot a tagged animal so this is pure speculation.

if the animal is in season you are licenced to shoot it and you have permission to hunt on the land that you shoot it on . i cant see how i would feel much different from shooting an un tagged animal beyond thinking oops ive messed up someones science project.

but certainly if i was legaly hunting (and thats the only hunting i personely would do).
i would simply treat it as i would any other kill accept i would report the kill to the tracking organisation

The fact is there are heaps of wild deer. I dont see why there was such a need to make a big deal about one that was injured, but the RSPCA have their publicity motives I suppose. I see deer every single day, in small herds here in North Suffolk. In fact I dont always bother to really look at them, I see deer more than I do robins! I walk into the fields to draw them sometimes, I think they quite like it actually. They arent so wild any way, I reckon they get food in peoples back yards on an early morning or whatever. If you saw deer in say Stang forest one tiny click or snap and theyd be gone. The ones around here are not like that. I play music to them they seem to like Miles Davis, joggers run past, galloping horses, clap hands, slam the car door, toot the horn (to make them run, I like watching them run, but they are reluctant to run they prefer sun bathing) But a mate of mine wrote off his car when a deer walked into it doing 70 on the A140. His wife was 8 months pregnant and she went premature because of the shock. Only a few weeks ago my wife had a near similar experience near Thetford, only fortunately the animal stepped back at the last moment. Its sad that their only real predator (apart from hunters) is the motor vehicle.

avoid seeing the world as tame
avoid speciesism yes thats likr racism and sexism
we all evolved on the same blue green planet
despite what you think or the predominent power
might is not right
its just domination over a species
